Threats to Biodiversity

- La biodiversité a changé au cours des temps géologiques,augmentant et diminuantau cours des cinq principales extinctions de massequi jalonnent l'histoire de la Terre. 
Mais la sixième extinction de masse,connue sous le nom d'extinction de l'Holocène,peut être attribuée aux activités humaines. 
L'explosion de la population humaineest au cœur de la perte actuelle de biodiversité,à cause de la perte des habitats, de la surexploitation,de l'introduction d'espèces invasiveset du changement climatique mondial. 
Le gros accroissement des besoins en ressourcespour la nourriture et l'habitat humainsa entraîné la perte de l'habitat de nombreuses espèces. 
La déforestation et la création de terres agricolespoussent les espèces hors de leurs habitats naturelsvers des domaines vitaux plus petits et fragmentés,plus pauvres en ressourceset posant plus de défis à leur survie. 
Nombre d'espèces,utilisées pour l'alimentation et la médecins,sont surexploitées, au-delà de leur capacité à récupérer. 
La cause en est une forte demande économiqueà laquelle ne répond pasla capacité reproductive de l'espèce. 
De plus, l'introduction d'espèces invasivesa entraîné des changements drastiques d'écosystèmes,éliminant des espèces natives par la prédationet la compétition pour les ressources. 
Sans prédateurs naturels, les espèces invasivesentraînent un rapide déclin de la biodiversité. 
Pour finir, l'augmentation des émissions mondialesde gaz carbonique et autres gaz à effet de serrea entraîné une hausse progressivede la température mondiale moyenne. 
Pour beaucoup d'espèces,cela signifie une diminution de l'espace habitableet des modifications des migrationset autres activités saisonnières.

Il y a eu cinq événements majeurs d’extinction tout au long de l’histoire géologique, entraînant l’élimination de la biodiversité, suivie d’un rebond des espèces qui se sont adaptées aux nouvelles conditions. Dans l’époque géologique actuelle, l’Holocène, il y a un sixième événement d’extinction en cours. Cette extinction de masse a été attribuée aux activités humaines et elle est donc provisoirement appelée l’Anthropocène. En 2019, la population humaine a atteint 7,7 milliards de personnes et devrait en comprendre 10 milliards d’ici 2060. Signe de notre impact, par la biomasse (la masse réelle d’une espèce particulière), les humains représentent 36 % des mammifères de la Terre, le bétail 60 %, et les mammifères sauvages seulement 4 %. Environ 70 % de tous les oiseaux sont des volailles, de sorte que seulement 30 % sont sauvages.
 
 Pour minimiser l’impact humain sur la biodiversité et le climat, nous devons comprendre quelles activités sont problématiques et équilibrer les besoins de la civilisation humaine et le progrès avec un plan durable pour les générations futures. Parmi les principales menaces pour la biodiversité, c’est la perte d’habitat due au développement humain, la surexploitation et l’augmentation des émissions de dioxyde de carbone des usines et des véhicules.
 
 <h4>Études de cas</h4>
 
 On peut trouver une étude de cas de l’impact humain sur les conditions météorologiques dans l’événement des années 1930, qui est connu sous le nom de Dust Bowl. Dans les années 1920 et 1930, un grand nombre d’agriculteurs se sont installés dans les Grandes Plaines et ils ont défriché les terres, enlevant les plantes indigènes couvrant le sol afin de planter leurs plantes cultivées, qui ont généralement des systèmes de racines peu profonds. Dans une région partant du Kansas et du nord du Texas et s’étendant vers le nord jusqu’au Canada et au sud jusqu’au Texas, une association de conditions de sécheresse extrême et de pratiques agricoles mal envisagées a entraîné des tempêtes de poussière qui ont déposé des débris jusqu’aux états du nord-est. En fin de compte, à cause de ces tempêtes et de l’économie en déclin qui coïncidait malheureusement, il y a eu une pénurie alimentaire générale et de nombreuses familles ont dû abandonner leurs fermes. Il est devenu clair que pour que la terre puisse soutenir des espèces végétales seules qui ne sont pas naturellement adaptées, il faut bien planifier les exploitations pour tenir compte de la perte de biodiversité.
 
 Un exemple moins radical se trouve dans le parc national de Yellowstone aux États-Unis. Les populations de loups ont diminué radicalement après le début de la migration vers l’ouest de la population humaine. En conséquence, la population de proies animales comme l’antilocapre et le cerf mulet a augmenté. Puisque ces animaux ont tendance à manger les jeunes arbustes de peupliers faux-trembles, cela a entraîné un déclin des peupliers faux-trembles. Parmi les effets en aval de cette perte d’arbres, figurent l’érosion accrue des terres et la perte d’habitat des oiseaux et d’autres animaux. Le soutien à cette chaîne d’événements proposée provient de la récente réintroduction du loup à Yellowstone, qui est en corrélation avec un rebond observé de la population des faux-trembles dans le parc. Si cette corrélation indique vraiment que le peuplier faux-tremble est revitalisé en raison de la réintroduction du loup, cette recherche renforce le concept général selon lequel les prédateurs ultimes (supérieurs) sont essentiels à la biodiversité des écosystèmes.
 
 Le maintien de la biodiversité est essentiel pour préserver l’équilibre des écosystèmes, prolonger les conditions météorologiques prévisibles et conserver les matières premières pour la recherche sur de nouveaux produits industriels et médicaux.

Human activity is changing biodiversity and pushing Earth toward a sixth extinction event. Earlier mass extinctions ended many species, and then new species spread into the changed environment. Today, the Holocene epoch is seeing a mass extinction linked to human actions, and it is often called the Anthropocene.

Human numbers and human biomass show how large this impact has become. In 2019, the human population reached 7.7 billion and is projected to rise to 10 billion by 2060. By biomass, humans make up about 36% of Earth’s mammals, livestock make up 60%, and wild mammals only 4%. About 70% of all birds are poultry, so only 30% are wild birds.

Several common activities threaten biodiversity. Habitat loss can happen when land is cleared for human development. Over-farming can also damage ecosystems. In addition, factories and vehicles release carbon dioxide, which adds to climate problems. To reduce these effects, people need to understand which activities cause harm and find a sustainable balance between human progress and the needs of future generations.

The Dust Bowl is one clear case of human impact on land and weather. In the 1920s and 1930s, many farmers moved to the Great Plains and clear cut the land. They removed native ground-cover plants so they could plant crops with shallow roots. Then extreme drought and poor farming practices combined to create dust storms that spread debris as far as the northeastern states. Food shortages followed, and many families had to leave their farms.

The Dust Bowl shows that farmland must be planned carefully if it is to support single crop species that are not naturally adapted to the area. A different example comes from Yellowstone National Park. After people moved west, wolf populations dropped sharply. Prey animals such as pronghorn and mule deer increased, and they ate young Aspen saplings. Aspen trees declined, which led to more erosion and less habitat for birds and other animals.

Wolves were later reintroduced to Yellowstone, and the Aspen population has since shown a rebound. If this pattern is truly caused by the return of wolves, it supports the idea that apex predators help keep ecosystems balanced. Biodiversity also matters because it helps preserve stable ecosystems, supports more predictable weather patterns, and keeps raw material available for new industrial and medical products.
