The Scientific Method

La méthode scientifique est une approche systématique suivie par toutes les disciplines scientifiques. Il suit six étapes principales:faire une observation, poser une question, construire une hypothèse, conduire d'expériences, interpréter des données, et enfin, la dérivation d'une conclusion. La méthode scientifique commence par une observation et une question pour aider à comprendre cette observation.Par exemple, le chimiste Français Antoine Lavoisier a observé les phénomènes de combustion. Il a formulé une question pour comprendre ce qui se passe quand on brûle quelque chose. Où va la matière La troisième étape de la méthode scientifique est de formuler une hypothèse une explication provisoire pour l'observation en question, ce qui peut être testé.En réponse à sa question Où va la matière Lavoiser a émis l'hypothèse que dans une réaction chimique, la matière n'a été ni créée ni détruite. Une bonne hypothèse est également testable et falsifiable. Une hypothèse testable est celle qui fait des prédictions qui peuvent être confirmées par des expérimentations ou observations.Elle est falsifiable lorsqu'elle peut être réfutée par l'expérimentation. La quatrième étape de la méthode scientifique est l'expérimentation et la collecte de données. Les expériences sont des observations ou des mesures conduit dans des environnements contrôlés comme la température, la pression ou le volume.Cette étape examine dans quelle mesure le monde réel correspond à celui prédit par l'hypothèse. Quelques expériences et observations sont qualitatifs décrivant comment un processus se déroule. D'autres sont quantitatifs mesurer ou quantifier quelque chose sur le processus.Lavoisier a testé son hypothèse en chauffant du mercure dans un cadre fermé. Cela a conduit à la formation d'une substance rougeâtre. Ses expériences étaient quantitatives, alors il a soigneusement enregistré la messe des réactifs et des produits en système fermé ainsi que séparé.La cinquième étape est l'interprétation et l'analyse des données évaluer si les résultats soutiennent ou réfutent l'hypothèse et si une expérimentation supplémentaire est nécessaire. La dernière étape consiste à tirer une conclusion logique et décider d'accepter ou de rejeter l'hypothèse.Si les résultats soutiennent fortement l'hypothèse, alors il est accepté. Il peut également être soumis à des tests supplémentaires ou affiné en posant de nouvelles questions, et mener de nouvelles expériences. Pour y parvenir, les scientifiques suivent une série définie d'étapes qui, ensemble, constituent la méthode scientifique. Cette approche implique de faire des observations, de poser des questions, de construire une hypothèse, de mener des expériences, d'analyser les résultats et d'élaborer une conclusion.  
 
 <h4>Observation et question </h4>
 
 La première étape de la méthode scientifique consiste à observer un phénomène dans le monde physique. Ensuite, une question est posée pour mieux comprendre ce phénomène. Par exemple, la question pourrait être la suivante : “ qu'est ce qui gèle plus rapidement, l’eau ordinaire ou l’eau à laquelle du sel a été ajouté ? “ 
 
 <h4>Hypothèse </h4>
 
 L'étape suivante consiste à formuler une explication pour l'observation particulière. Cette interprétation provisoire d'un ensemble d'observations qui sert de guide pour comprendre le phénomène observé est appelée une hypothèse. Par exemple, pour la question ci-dessus, une hypothèse pourrait suggérer que l'ajout de sel modifie le point de congélation de l'eau ordinaire. 
 
 Les scientifiques utilisent souvent la recherche et la littérature antérieures pour commencer leur enquête et formuler une hypothèse qui pourrait être vérifiée par des expériences. Une hypothèse solide est à la fois vérifiable et réfutable. Elle est considérée comme vérifiable s'il est possible de prouver qu'elle est juste, et réfutable s'il est possible de prouver qu'elle est fausse ; auquel cas, le scientifique doit modifier ou rejeter l'hypothèse.  
 
 <h4>Expérimentation  </h4>
 
 La troisième étape consiste à concevoir et à mener des expériences pour vérifier la validité de l'hypothèse. Les expériences sont des mesures et des observations effectuées dans des conditions contrôlées. Certaines observations et expériences sont qualitatives (décrivant comment un processus se produit), tandis que beaucoup sont quantitatives (mesurant ou quantifiant quelque chose à propos du processus). Pour vérifier l'hypothèse de l'eau salée, le scientifique peut prendre deux verres avec des quantités égales d'eau, à température ambiante. Une cuillerée de sel peut être ajoutée à l'un des verres, et les deux verres placés dans le congélateur. L'état de l'eau dans chaque verre peut être observé toutes les 15 minutes et le temps mis pour que chaque verre d'eau devienne complètement gelé peut être enregistré.  
 
 La conception expérimentale est une étape critique de la méthode scientifique. Il convient de faire attention à contrôler le nombre de facteurs variables afin de pouvoir surveiller l'effet d'un facteur spécifique en question.  
 
 <h4>Analyse du résultat et conclusion </h4>
 
 L'étape suivante consiste à analyser les résultats des expériences et à conclure si ces résultats valident ou non l'hypothèse. Si la conclusion est qu'ils le font, alors l'hypothèse est acceptée et pourrait être soumise à d'autres expérimentations pour répondre à de nouvelles questions. Lorsqu'une hypothèse s'avère fausse, une nouvelle hypothèse peut être proposée, et le processus se poursuit.  
 
 Dans l'exemple de l'eau salée, les résultats indiquent que l'eau salée met plus de temps pour geler que l'eau ordinaire. Cela donne la conclusion que l'eau avec du sel gèle à un rythme plus lent que l'eau ordinaire. Ainsi, les résultats valident l'hypothèse.

Chemistry uses the scientific method to turn observations into testable answers. Scientists begin by observing a phenomenon in the physical world and then asking a question about it. This process helps explain everyday chemistry through evidence.

A question leads to a hypothesis, which is a tentative explanation for what is being observed. Scientists often use earlier research and published literature to shape that idea. A strong hypothesis must be testable, meaning it can be supported by evidence, and falsifiable, meaning it can also be proven wrong.

The next step is experimentation. Scientists design and carry out experiments under controlled conditions to test the hypothesis. These tests can include qualitative observations, which describe how a process happens, and quantitative measurements, which record how much or how long something changes.

A clear example is the freezing of plain water and salt water. A scientist can place equal amounts of room-temperature water into two glasses, add salt to one glass, and put both in a freezer. By checking the glasses every 15 minutes and recording the time until each one freezes, the scientist can compare the results while keeping other variables controlled.

After the experiment, the results are analyzed and used to form a conclusion. If the data support the hypothesis, it may be accepted and tested further with new questions. If the hypothesis is not supported, a new one can be proposed and the process begins again. In the salt-water example, the results show that salt water freezes more slowly than plain water, so the hypothesis is validated.
