Enthalpies of Reaction

Pour une réaction qui se produit dans des conditions normales, une équation générale est utilisée pour calculer le changement d'enthalpie standard de la réaction. Cette équation est résolue par trouver la différence entre la somme des enthalpies standard de formation des produits et la somme des enthalpies standard de formation des réactifs, chaque multipliée par son coefficient stoechiométrique. Considérons la combustion de 2 moles d'acétylène gazeux avec 5 moles d'oxygène gazeux pour former 4 moles de dioxyde de carbone gazeux et 2 moles de vapeur d'eau dans des conditions standard.L'enthalpie de la réaction est égale à la somme de quatre fois l'enthalpie de formation de dioxyde de carbone et de deux fois l'enthalpie de formation de vapeur d'eau, moins la somme de deux fois l'enthalpie de formation de gaz d'acétylène et cinq fois l'enthalpie de formation de l'oxygène de gaz. L'équation d'enthalpie est dérivée de la combinaison de deux concepts:l'enthalpie standard de formation et la loi de Hess. Le premier terme représente les enthalpies standard de formation des produits;la formation de dioxyde de carbone à partir du carbone et de l'oxygène-équation 1, et la formation d'eau à partir de l'hydrogène et de l'oxygène-équation 2.Les enthalpies standard connues de formation pour le dioxyde de carbone et l'eau sont négatives 393, 5 kilojoules et négatives 241, 8 kilojoules, respectivement. Étant donné que la combustion produit 4 moles de dioxyde de carbone, delta H1 serait l'enthalpie standard de formation de dioxyde de carbone fois 4, ce qui serait négatif 1574 kilojoules. Par conséquent, l'enthalpie standard nette de formation des réactifs est de négative 453, 4 kilojoules.Rappelons de la Loi de Hess, que si une réaction en une étape est effectuée en plusieurs étapes, alors la somme des enthalpies de chaque étape, est égale à la variation d'enthalpie nette. En substituant les valeurs des enthalpies de formation dans l'équation donne l'enthalpie de la réaction négative de 2511 kilojoules.

La loi de Hess peut être utilisée pour déterminer la variation d'enthalpie de n'importe quelle réaction si les enthalpies de formation correspondantes des réactifs et des produits sont fournies. La réaction principale peut être divisée en réactions par étapes : (i) décompositions des réactifs en leurs éléments constitutifs, pour lesquels les variations d'enthalpie sont proportionnelles aux enthalpies de formation négatives des réactifs, −ΔHf° (réactifs), suivies par les (ii) réassociations des éléments (obtenus à l'étape 1) pour donner les produits, avec les variations d'enthalpie proportionnelles aux enthalpies de formation des produits,  &DeltaHf° (produits). La variation d'enthalpie standard de la réaction globale est donc égale à : (ii) la somme des enthalpies standards de formation de tous les produits plus (i) la somme des enthalpies standards de formation négatives des réactifs, comme indiqué par l'équation suivante, où ∑ représente &ldquo la somme de ” et n correspond aux coefficients stœchiométriques.

Calculating reaction heat with Hess's law uses standard enthalpies of formation to find the enthalpy change of a reaction. When the formation values for the reactants and products are known, the overall reaction can be broken into simpler stepwise reactions. This approach helps show how the heat change for the full reaction is built from smaller parts.

First, the reactants are thought of as being decomposed into their component elements. The enthalpy change for this step is proportional to the negative of the standard enthalpies of formation of the reactants, written as -ΔHf°(reactants). Next, those elements are recombined to form the products, and this step has an enthalpy change proportional to ΔHf°(products).

The standard enthalpy change of the overall reaction is found by adding the sum of the standard enthalpies of formation of all the products and the sum of the negatives of the standard enthalpies of formation of the reactants. In the equation, Σ means &quot;the sum of&quot; and n is the stoichiometric coefficient. The formula is usually rearranged into a simpler form for calculation.

A worked example shows why the equation works and how to use it to calculate the standard enthalpy change of a reaction. In that example, the heat of formation values used are ΔHf°(HNO3) = -206.64 kJ/mol, ΔHf°(NO) = +90.2 kJ/mol, ΔHf°(NO2) = +33 kJ/mol, and ΔHf°(H2O) = -285.8 kJ/mol. This method follows the special form of Hess's law described in OpenStax Chemistry 2e, Section 5.3: Enthalpy.
