Les éléments du groupe deux sont les métaux alcalino-terreux avec deux électrons dans la coque de valence.Les six colonnes d'extrême droite forment le bloc p. La shell de valence de ces éléments a complètement occupé les orbitales s et le dernier électron entre dans l'orbitale p. Lorsque leurs configurations électroniques sont ajoutées au tableau, on observe une récurrence périodique de configurations d'électroniques similaires au niveau des couches externes de ces éléments. Parce qu'ils sont sur les couches externes d'un atome, les électrons de valence jouent le rôle le plus important dans les réactions chimiques. Les électrons externes ont la plus haute énergie des électrons dans un atome et sont plus facilement perdus ou mis en commun que les électrons de cœur. Les électrons de valence sont également le facteur déterminant concernant certaines propriétés physiques des éléments. 
 
 Les lignes horizontales sont appelées périodes. Le long d'une période, chaque élément consécutif possède un proton supplémentaire dans le noyau et un électron supplémentaire sur la couche de valence. Les colonnes verticales sont des groupes. Les éléments d'un groupe (ou d'une colonne) ont le même nombre d'électrons de valence (figure 1) ; les métaux alcalins lithium et sodium ont chacun un seul électron de valence, les métaux alcalino-terreux béryllium et magnésium en ont chacun deux, et les halogènes fluor et chlore ont chacun sept électrons de valence.  C'est la perte, le gain ou la mise en commun des électrons de valence qui définit la façon dont les éléments réagissent. La similarité entre les propriétés chimiques des éléments du même groupe existe parce qu'ils ont le même nombre d'électrons de valence. 
 
 Il est important de se rappeler que le tableau périodique a été conçu sur la base du comportement chimique des éléments, bien avant qu'une idée de leur structure atomique ne soit accessible. Maintenant, on comprend l'organisation du tableau périodique ; les éléments dont les atomes ont le même nombre d'électrons de valence sont dans le même groupe. Les sections colorées de la figure 1 montrent les trois catégories d'éléments classés d'après le remplissage des orbitales.

 Les éléments du groupe principal sont parfois appelés les éléments représentatifs. Il s'agit des éléments pour lesquels le dernier électron ajouté va sur une orbitale s ou p dans la couche la plus externe, illustrés en bleu et en rouge dans la figure 1. Cette catégorie comprend tous les éléments non métalliques, ainsi que les métalloïdes et de nombreux métaux. Les électrons de valence pour les éléments du groupe principal sont ceux ayant le niveau n le plus haut. Par exemple, le gallium (Ga, numéro atomique 31) possède la configuration électronique [Ar]4s23d104p1, qui contient trois électrons de valence (soulignés). Les orbitales d entièrement remplies comptent comme des électrons de cœur, et non comme des électrons de valence. 
 
 Les deux colonnes les plus à gauche forment le bloc s et les six colonnes les plus à droite le bloc p. Les gaz nobles, qui font partie du bloc p, ont tous huit électrons de valence, à l'exception de l'hélium, qui en a deux. Ces éléments sont très stables et ne réagissent pas. 
 
 Les éléments de transition ou métaux de transition : il s'agit d'éléments métalliques dans lesquels le dernier électron ajouté va sur une orbitale d. Les électrons de valence (ajoutés après la dernière configuration de gaz noble) dans ces éléments comprennent les électrons ns et (n – 1)d. La définition officielle des éléments de transition de l'UICPA précise ceux dont les orbitales d sont partiellement remplies. Ainsi, les éléments avec des orbitales complètement remplies (Zn, Cd, Hg, ainsi que Cu, Ag et Au dans la figure 1) ne sont pas des éléments de transition techniquement. Cependant, le terme est fréquemment utilisé pour désigner l'ensemble du bloc d (de couleur jaune dans la figure 1).

The periodic table organizes elements by increasing atomic number, and it also shows why elements in the same group behave alike. As the electron configurations are placed into the table, a repeating pattern appears in the outer shells of atoms. These outer electrons are called valence electrons, and they play the biggest role in chemical reactions. They are the highest-energy electrons in an atom, so they are easier to lose or share than core electrons. Valence electrons also help determine some physical properties of elements.

The horizontal rows on the periodic table are periods. Moving across a period, each next element has one more proton in the nucleus and one more electron in the valence shell. The vertical columns are groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons, which is why they often show similar chemical behavior. For example, lithium and sodium each have one valence electron, beryllium and magnesium each have two, and fluorine and chlorine each have seven. Because elements react by losing, gaining, or sharing valence electrons, their group placement helps predict how they will behave.

It is important to remember that the periodic table was built from chemical behavior before atomic structure was understood. Today, the pattern makes sense because elements with the same number of valence electrons are placed in the same group. The colored regions of the table also show three categories based on which orbitals are being filled. Main group elements, also called representative elements, are the elements whose last added electron enters an s or p orbital in the outermost shell. This category includes all nonmetals, the metalloids, and many metals. For main group elements, the valence electrons are the electrons with the highest n level. Gallium, for example, has the electron configuration [Ar] 4s2 3d10 4p1, so it has three valence electrons. The filled d orbitals are counted as core electrons, not valence electrons.

The two far-left columns form the s-block, and the six far-right columns form the p-block. The noble gases are part of the p-block. They usually have eight valence electrons, except helium, which has two. This helps explain why noble gases are highly stable and unreactive. Transition elements, or transition metals, are metallic elements whose last added electron enters a d orbital. Their valence electrons include the ns and (n - 1)d electrons added after the last noble gas configuration. By the official IUPAC definition, transition elements have partially filled d orbitals, so Zn, Cd, Hg, and also Cu, Ag, and Au are not technically transition elements, even though the term is often used for the whole d-block.

The d-block has 10 columns. As you move across each row, the d orbitals that fill have a principal quantum number that is one less than the row number. In the fourth row, 3d orbitals fill; in the fifth row, 4d orbitals fill; and so on. Inner transition elements form the f-block, where the last electron added enters an f orbital. Their valence shells include the (n - 2)f, the (n - 1)d, and the ns subshells. The f orbitals that fill across each row have a principal quantum number that is two less than the row number. In the sixth row, 4f orbitals fill, and in the seventh row, 5f orbitals fill. The two inner transition series are the lanthanides, from lanthanum through lutetium, and the actinides, from actinium through lawrencium. Lanthanum and actinium are included in those series because they are similar to the other members, even though they are transition metals with no f electrons.
