Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR): Overview

La résonance magnétique nucléaire, ou RMN, est un phénomène présenté par certains noyaux qui peuvent absorber un rayonnement radiofréquence caractéristique dans des conditions spécifiques.
La RMN est largement utilisée en spectroscopie et en imagerie médicale.
Dans ces deux applications, l’échantillon ou le sujet est placé dans un champ magnétique et irradié avec de l’énergie radiofréquence.
La spectroscopie RMN fournit des informations détaillées sur les environnements électroniques des atomes dans l’échantillon. Il génère un spectre qui représente les fréquences d’absorption caractéristiques de l’échantillon en fonction des intensités de crête.
Le spectre RMN peut révéler les structures moléculaires des composés organiques et des macromolécules biologiques et peut montrer des processus dynamiques parallèlement à la cinétique de réaction.
En médecine, l’imagerie par résonance magnétique, communément appelée IRM, utilise la RMN pour générer des images détaillées des organes et des tissus internes.

Nuclear magnetic resonance, or NMR, is a phenomenon that certain nuclei can show when they absorb radio frequency energy under the right conditions. Scientists use it in molecular spectroscopy and in medical imaging. In both cases, the sample or the person being studied is placed in a magnetic field and exposed to radio frequency energy.

In NMR spectroscopy, the result is a spectrum. This spectrum plots the absorption frequencies of the sample against peak intensity. The pattern gives detailed information about the electronic environments of atoms in the sample.

That information can help scientists identify the structures of organic compounds and biological macromolecules. It can also help explain dynamic processes and reaction kinetics, which is the study of how reactions change over time.

In medicine, NMR supports magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI. MRI is a noninvasive imaging method, so it avoids harmful radiation. It uses NMR to create detailed images of internal organs and tissues.
