Rappelons que le 1,3-butadiène est un système conjugué à quatre atomes de carbone. En comparaison, le cation allyle et l’anion sont des systèmes conjugués à trois atomes de carbone.
Une combinaison linéaire des trois orbitales atomiques p non hybridées dans les systèmes allyliques donne trois orbitales moléculaires π.
L’orbitale moléculaire de plus basse énergie, ψ1, est formée par un chevauchement en phase de toutes les orbitales p et est entièrement liante.
ψ2 a un nœud passant à travers le carbone central. Comme il n’y a pas de chevauchement entre les carbones adjacents, il s’agit d’une orbitale non liante et énergétiquement similaire aux orbitales atomiques.

The allyl cation and allyl anion both have the same three-carbon orbital pattern. An allyl group is a conjugated system, which means its electrons are spread across connected p orbitals. In the allyl anion, propene is treated with a strong base that removes a methyl hydrogen. In the allyl cation, the species forms as an intermediate in substitution reactions that involve allylic halides.

In both cases, the allylic carbon changes from sp3 to sp2 hybridization. That change leaves three sp2-hybridized carbons in a row, each with one unhybridized p orbital. These three atomic p orbitals combine to form three molecular orbitals: phi 1, phi 2, and phi 3.

Phi 1 is the bonding molecular orbital. Phi 2 is nonbonding and has a node through the central carbon. Phi 3 is antibonding and has two nodes. The allyl cation and allyl anion share this same molecular orbital framework. They differ only in the number of pi electrons. The allyl cation has two pi electrons in phi 1. The allyl anion has four pi electrons, which fill phi 1 and phi 2.
