Les réarrangements sigmatropiques impliquent la migration d’une liaison σ d’un endroit à un autre au sein d’un système π.
L’ordre des réarrangements sigmatropes est indiqué par deux chiffres entre parenthèses, indiquant le nombre d’atomes à travers lesquels la liaison σ migre.
Par exemple, dans le 1,5-hexadiène, les deux extrémités de la liaison σ migrent de trois atomes. C’est ce qu’on appelle [3,3] réarrangement sigmatropique.

Les déplacements sigmatropiques induits thermiquement se déroulent suprafacialement si la somme des paires d'électrons π et σ participant au réarrangement est impaire. Par exemple, le déplacement [3,3] dans le 1,5-hexadiène implique deux liaisons π et une liaison sigma σ, ou trois paires d'électrons, et suit donc une voie suprafaciale.

En revanche, la voie antarafaciale est autorisée par symétrie si la somme est paire, comme dans le 1,3,5-heptatriène, qui implique trois liaisons π et une liaison sigma σ, soit un total de quatre paires d'électrons.

Thermal sigmatropic shifts are intramolecular pericyclic reactions. In these reactions, a sigma bond moves from one part of a pi system to another. The total number of sigma and pi bonds stays the same.

These shifts are named with an order term written as [i,j]. The numbers i and j show how many atoms each end of the sigma bond travels across. A [3,3] shift in 1,5-hexadiene is called the Cope rearrangement, and a [1,7] hydride shift appears in 1,3,5-heptatriene.

Heat can drive sigmatropic shifts along different symmetry-allowed paths. A suprafacial pathway is allowed when the total number of pi and sigma electron pairs is odd. The [3,3] shift in 1,5-hexadiene has three electron pairs, so it follows a suprafacial path.

An antarafacial pathway is symmetry-allowed when the total number of electron pairs is even. The [1,7] hydride shift in 1,3,5-heptatriene has four electron pairs, so it fits the antarafacial case. These examples show how bond migration and electron count help classify thermal sigmatropic reactions.
