Les hydrocarbures insaturés monocycliques neutres avec un nombre impair d’atomes de carbone manquent d’aromaticité en raison de la présence d’un carbone sp3 intermédiaire dans le cycle.
Par exemple, le cyclopentadiène n’est pas aromatique, car il n’a que 4 électrons π et un carbone sp3 qui perturbe le chevauchement continu des orbitales p.
Notamment, le fait de retirer un hydrogène du groupe CH2 avec les deux, un ou aucun des électrons de liaison convertit le carbone sp3 en sp2, générant respectivement un cation, un radical et un anion.
Par rapport au cation et au radical, seul l’anion a le nombre requis de (4n + 2) π électrons.
De plus, la disponibilité d’une orbitale 2p au carbone sp2 facilite un chevauchement continu des orbitales p et la délocalisation de la charge négative dans tout le cycle, rendant l’anion cyclopentadiényle aromatique.
De plus, les électrons π occupant les orbitales moléculaires de liaison et les cinq structures de résonance corroborent davantage la stabilité inhabituelle de l’anion aromatique.

Aromatic Hydrocarbon Anions: Structural Overview

Les hydrocarbures neutres comme le cyclopentadiène avec un nombre impair d'atomes de carbone et un groupe CH2 intermédiaire dans le cycle ne sont pas aromatiques. Le cyclopentadiène avec 4 électrons π ne satisfait pas à la règle des électrons 4n + 2 π. De plus, le groupe CH2 intermédiaire est hybride sp3 et ne dispose pas d'une orbitale p vacante, interrompant ainsi le chevauchement des orbitales p de manière continue et empêchant la délocalisation des électrons π dans tout l'anneau.

En raison de l'absence de chevauchement continu des orbitales p, le cyclopentadiène ne répond pas aux critères d'aromaticité. Cependant, l'élimination d'un hydrogène avec les deux ou un ou aucun électron du groupe CH2 entraîne la conversion du carbone sp3 en sp2, convertissant ainsi le cyclopentadiène en cation, radical et anion cyclopentadiényle, respectivement, ayant une orbitale p vacante. Parmi les trois espèces, le cation cyclopentadiényle et le radical avec respectivement quatre et cinq électrons π ne répondent pas aux critères de 4n + 2 électrons π et ne sont pas aromatiques. D'autre part, l'anion cyclopentadiényle avec 6 électrons π, un anneau continu superposé d'orbitales p et une densité électronique π délocalisée devient aromatique. La carte du potentiel électrostatique de l'anion corrobore la délocalisation des électrons π dans tout l'anneau. De plus, les cinq structures de résonance de l'anion cyclopentadiényle et l'occupation des orbitales moléculaires de liaison par les 6 électrons π du diagramme de gel valident la stabilité inhabituelle de l'anion.

cyclopentadienyl anion and aromaticity

Cyclopentadiene is a neutral hydrocarbon that is not aromatic. It contains an odd number of carbon atoms and one CH2 group in the ring. With only 4 pi electrons, it does not follow the 4n + 2 pi electron rule. The CH2 carbon is sp3 hybridized, so it has no vacant p orbital to keep p orbitals overlapped around the ring.

That break in overlap stops pi electrons from spreading across the entire ring. As a result, cyclopentadiene does not meet the usual aromaticity criteria. If one hydrogen is removed from the CH2 group, the carbon changes from sp3 to sp2 hybridization. This creates a vacant p orbital and gives three related species: the cyclopentadienyl cation, radical, and anion.

These three species do not behave the same way. The cyclopentadienyl cation has 4 pi electrons, and the radical has 5 pi electrons. Neither one satisfies the 4n + 2 rule, so neither is aromatic. The cyclopentadienyl anion has 6 pi electrons, a continuous ring of overlapping p orbitals, and delocalized pi electron density. That makes it aromatic and unusually stable.

The electrostatic potential map of the anion supports this electron delocalization across the ring. Its five resonance structures also show how the electrons can be spread out. The frost diagram gives the same result, since all 6 pi electrons fill bonding molecular orbitals. Together, these features explain why the cyclopentadienyl anion is more stable than the neutral ring, the cation, or the radical.
