Gravitational Potential Energy

L’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle est l’énergie stockée dans un objet en raison de sa position dans le champ gravitationnel.
Mathématiquement, il est défini comme le produit du poids et de la hauteur d’un objet au-dessus du sol.
Ainsi, l’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle d’une boule de masse m suspendue à une hauteur y du sol est mgy.
Par exemple, au hockey sur glace, si une rondelle de masse m prend une trajectoire parabolique après le tir, alors l’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle au point B est mgy, où y est la hauteur de la rondelle par rapport au sol.
Lorsque la rondelle se déplace d’un point A à un point B, la variation de l’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle est positive lorsque l’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle augmente et est égale à la variation négative du travail effectué.
De même, lorsque la rondelle se déplace d’un point B à un point C, l’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle diminue et le travail effectué par la force gravitationnelle est positif.
Ainsi, lorsqu’un corps se déplace vers le haut, l’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle augmente et diminue lorsque le corps se déplace vers le bas.

L'énergie potentielle n'est pas seulement une propriété de chaque objet, mais aussi une propriété des interactions entre les objets dans un système choisi. Pour chaque type d'interaction présent dans un système, il existe un type correspondant d'énergie potentielle. L'énergie potentielle totale du système est la somme des énergies potentielles de tous les objets. L'énergie potentielle peut être classifiée en deux catégories principales : l'énergie potentielle gravitationnelle et l'énergie potentielle élastique. L'énergie potentielle associée au poids d'un corps et à sa hauteur au-dessus du sol est appelée énergie potentielle gravitationnelle.

La force gravitationnelle sur chaque particule (ou corps) est simplement son poids (mg) près de la surface de la Terre, agissant vers le centre de la Terre. Selon la troisième loi de Newton, chaque particule exerce une force de même magnitude et de direction opposée sur la Terre. De plus, la deuxième loi de Newton nous dit que la magnitude de l'accélération produite par chacune de ces forces sur la Terre est (mg) divisée par la masse de la Terre. Étant donné que le rapport de la masse de n'importe quel objet ordinaire à la masse de la Terre est négligeable, le mouvement de la Terre peut être complètement négligé. Gravitational potential energy depends on an object’s weight and its height above the ground. It is one part of the total potential energy of a system, which comes from the interactions between objects. In a system, the total potential energy is the sum of the potential energies for all the objects.

Potential energy is usually grouped into two main categories: gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy. Gravitational potential energy describes the energy tied to a body’s weight and position near Earth. Elastic potential energy is the other major category, and it comes from a different kind of interaction.

Near Earth’s surface, the gravitational force on a body is its weight, or mg, and it points toward the center of Earth. By Newton’s third law, the body pulls on Earth with an equal force in the opposite direction. Newton’s second law shows that Earth’s acceleration from this force is mg divided by Earth’s mass, but Earth is so massive compared with ordinary objects that its motion can be neglected.

Because of this, we treat the situation as a single-particle system in a uniform gravitational field. The work done by Earth’s gravitational force near the surface depends on the object’s mass, the acceleration due to gravity, and the change in height. That work is the negative of the change in gravitational potential energy.
