Lorsqu’un radical extrait une espèce d’un composé, il conduit à la formation d’un nouveau radical. Si l’espèce abstraite est un atome d’hydrogène, on parle d’abstraction d’hydrogène.
Cependant, cela est différent du processus de transfert de protons. Un transfert de protons est ionique, c’est-à-dire que seul le noyau de l’atome d’hydrogène subit une relocalisation.
Dans la méthode d’abstraction de l’hydrogène, l’atome d’hydrogène entier – le proton et l’électron – est déplacé.

Même si l'homolyse produit des radicaux, elle est différente de l'abstraction radicale. Lors de l'homolyse, une molécule à spin apparié produit deux radicaux ; en abstraction, un radical réagit avec une molécule à spin apparié et produit un nouveau radical et une nouvelle molécule à spin apparié.

Plus important encore, il existe une différence fondamentale entre les mécanismes d’extraction d’hydrogène et de transfert de protons. Le transfert de protons est de nature ionique, avec le mouvement du seul noyau de l’atome d’hydrogène. Cela donne un anion de l'autre réactif avec rétention de son électron. Radical abstraction helps drive radical chain reactions. In this process, a relatively unstable radical removes an atom from a compound and forms a new radical that is more stable. The atom taken in this step can be hydrogen or a halogen.

A radical initiator can first form radicals by homolysis, which is the breaking of a spin-paired molecule into two radicals. That is different from abstraction. In abstraction, a radical reacts with a spin-paired molecule and produces one new radical plus one new spin-paired molecule.

Hydrogen abstraction is not the same as proton transfer. Proton transfer is ionic and moves only the hydrogen nucleus. It leaves an anion behind with its electron. In hydrogen abstraction, the hydrogen atom moves with its electron, so a radical species is formed. Halogen abstraction works in a similar way, because a halogen atom can be removed with one unpaired electron.
