La stéréochimie de l’halogénation radicalaire dépend du fait que la molécule réactive est chirale ou achirale.
Par exemple, le n-butane achiral, lors de la chloration radicalaire, donne du 1- et du 2-chlorobutane. La réaction introduit un nouveau centre chiral, car l’un des produits est un mélange racémique.
La formation d’un mélange racémique est entraînée par la génération d’un intermédiaire radical planaire trigonal achiral, sur lequel le chlore peut attaquer de l’une ou l’autre face, produisant des quantités égales d’énantiomères R et S.
Cela rend les hydrogènes de carbone 2 énantiotopique dans la nature.
De même, l’halogénation radicalaire au niveau d’un centre chiral existant forme également un mélange racémique.
Ici, l'intermédiaire radicalaire perd la configuration du réactif et devient achiral, permettant l'attaque halogène des deux côtés et produisant des quantités égales d'énantiomères.
En revanche, un composé chiral avec un carbone chiral non impliqué dans l’halogénation radicalaire donne des produits diastéréoisomères, introduisant un deuxième centre chiral.
Le centre chiral existant rend le radical planaire trigonal intermédiaire chiral. Par conséquent, le chlore attaque plus largement d’une face que de l’autre et produit des produits chiraux et diastéréoisomères de quantités inégales.

Radical halogenation can change the chirality of a molecule, which is the three-dimensional arrangement of its atoms. The products depend on whether the reaction creates a new chiral center, reacts at an existing chiral center, or adds a second chiral center.

When radical halogenation forms a new chiral center, the product can be a racemic mixture. For example, halogenation of butane gives 2-chlorobutane and 1-chlorobutane. The 2-chlorobutane product has a chiral center, but it is formed as a racemic mixture because the radical intermediate is trigonal planar, or flat in shape.

If halogenation happens at an existing chiral carbon, the result is a 1:1 ratio of enantiomers. Enantiomers are mirror-image forms of the same molecule. Here, the trigonal planar radical intermediate removes the original chirality of the starting material.

Radical halogenation can also generate a second chiral center. In that case, diastereomers form. The radical intermediate is still trigonal planar, but the existing chiral center is not changed. That chiral center makes the two faces of the radical intermediate different, so halogen attack is unequal and the diastereomers form in unequal amounts.
