Les pics lorentziens dans un spectre RMN sont définis par leur position, leur amplitude et leur pleine largeur à mi-hauteur.
La largeur du pic d’un échantillon correctement préparé dans un champ parfaitement homogène est régie par le seul temps de relaxation spin-spin.
Cependant, le champ magnétique appliqué, B0, est rendu inhomogène par la présence de l’échantillon et de la sonde. Il en résulte des pics élargis avec des bandes latérales étrangères et une résolution médiocre.
Les inhomogénéités du champ magnétique sont corrigées par un processus appelé shimming.
Pendant le calage, le courant passe à travers un ensemble de bobines de cale entourant la sonde, générant de petits champs magnétiques qui renforcent ou opposent B0 au voisinage de l’échantillon.
Ces champs de bobine de cale sont manipulés pour obtenir le champ magnétique le plus uniforme sur l’échantillon.
Le shimming, associé à des paramètres de séquence d’impulsions optimisés et à une préparation correcte des échantillons, garantit une bonne forme de pic, un rapport signal/bruit élevé et une résolution maximale.

Lorsque les noyaux magnétiques d’un échantillon atteignent une résonance et subissent une relaxation, le signal détecté en RMN est une désintégration d’induction libre approximativement exponentielle. La transformée de Fourier d'une désintégration exponentielle donne un pic lorentzien dans le domaine fréquentiel. Les pics lorentziens dans un spectre RMN sont définis par leur amplitude, leur largeur totale à mi-hauteur et leur position, où la largeur du pic est régie par le seul temps de relaxation spin-spin. Cependant, dans les expériences réelles, le champ magnétique appliqué est rendu inhomogène par la présence de l'échantillon et de la sonde, ce qui entraîne des pics élargis avec des bandes latérales étrangères et une mauvaise résolution.

Ces inhomogénéités sont corrigées avant que les spectres ne soient enregistrés par un procédé appelé shimming. Un ensemble de bobines de calage entoure la sonde et génère de petits champs magnétiques en fonction du courant qui les traverse. Ces champs peuvent améliorer ou s'opposer à B0 au voisinage de l'échantillon. Le calage consiste à manipuler les champs de la bobine pour obtenir le champ magnétique le plus uniforme à travers l'échantillon, corrigeant ainsi les inhomogénéités. Le calage, les paramètres de séquence d'impulsions optimisés et la préparation appropriée des échantillons garantissent une bonne forme de pic, un faible rapport signal/bruit et une résolution maximale.

NMR peak shape depends on the signal created after magnetic nuclei resonate and relax. The detected free induction decay is approximately exponential. When that decay is Fourier transformed, it becomes a Lorentzian peak in the frequency domain.

A Lorentzian peak in an NMR spectrum is described by its amplitude, full width at half maximum, and position. Its width is governed by the spin-spin relaxation time alone. In real experiments, the sample and probe can make the magnetic field inhomogeneous. This can broaden peaks, add side-bands, and reduce resolution.

These field problems are corrected before spectra are recorded by shimming. Shim coils surround the probe and produce small magnetic fields based on the current applied to them. Their fields can either enhance or oppose B0 near the sample. By adjusting the coil fields, shimming makes the magnetic field more uniform across the sample.

Good shimming works best with optimized pulse sequence parameters and proper sample preparation. Together, these steps help produce good peak shape, low signal-to-noise ratio, and maximum resolution in NMR spectra.
