Tout comme le cation allyle et l’anion, le radical allyle est un système conjugué à trois atomes.
Le cadre orbital moléculaire est identique à celui des ions, avec un nœud passant par le carbone central en ψ2 et entre les carbones en ψ3.
Cependant, la différence réside dans le nombre de π électrons.
Rappelons que le cation allyle a deux électrons π occupant l’orbitale de liaison d’énergie la plus basse, ψ1. L’anion a quatre électrons π répartis entre les orbitales ψ1 et ψ2.
En comparaison, le radical a trois électrons π. Les deux premiers électrons occupent ψ1, et le troisième ψ2, également appelé orbitale moléculaire occupée individuellement, SOMO.
Notez que l’HOMO et le LUMO sont différents pour le système allyle.
Tout comme les ions, la représentation orbitale moléculaire du radical s’accorde avec l’image de résonance, suggérant que l’électron non apparié est délocalisé sur les trois atomes avec la densité électronique concentrée au niveau des carbones terminaux.
Par conséquent, les ions et les radicaux réagissent au niveau des carbones terminaux et sont plus stables que leurs homologues alkyles comparables.

Allyl radicals are three-carbon conjugated systems. They often form as intermediates in alkene halogenation when halogen adds to the allylic carbon instead of the double bond. Each of the three sp2-hybridized carbon atoms has an unhybridized p orbital, and these p orbitals combine to form three pi molecular orbitals.

The allyl radical shares the same molecular orbital pattern as allyl cations and allyl anions. The three systems differ only in the number of pi electrons. Allyl cations have two pi electrons, allyl radicals have three pi electrons, and allyl anions have four pi electrons.

In every allyl system, the first two electrons fill the bonding molecular orbital, psi 1. The next electron goes into the nonbonding molecular orbital, psi 2, in the radical. That orbital is empty in the allyl cation and fully filled in the allyl anion.

Because the highest occupied molecular orbital in the allyl radical has only one electron, it is called the singly occupied molecular orbital, or SOMO. This makes the HOMO and LUMO different across the allyl system. The video shows how electron occupancy changes the orbital picture for allyl radicals, cations, and anions.
