Types of Potential Energy

Les différentes formes d’énergie potentielle comprennent l’énergie gravitationnelle, électrique, chimique, nucléaire et l’énergie potentielle élastique.
L’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle est la forme la plus apparente de l’énergie potentielle, et elle dépend de la position relative de l’objet sous l’influence du champ gravitationnel. Par exemple, le livre tenu au-dessus de la table contient de l’énergie potentielle gravitationnelle.
L’énergie potentielle électrique provient de l’attraction ou de la répulsion de charges électriques, comme l’énergie stockée à l’intérieur d’un condensateur dans un circuit électrique est sous forme d’énergie potentielle électrique.

Potential energy is stored energy, and it appears in several everyday forms. It is also called energy at rest because it is ready to be used later. In physics, different systems can store energy in different ways.

Gravitational potential energy is the energy stored by an object because of its position. An apple hanging from a tree is one clear example. Electrical potential energy is stored when electric charges attract or repel each other. Chemical potential energy is stored in the bonds between atoms and molecules.

Potential energy can also be nuclear or elastic. Nuclear energy is stored in an atomic nucleus. Elastic energy is stored when an object changes shape, such as a stretched spring.

Systems with high potential energy are often less stable. They tend to move toward lower energy levels to become more stable. Uranium-235 is one example of this idea. Its unstable nucleus splits into smaller, more stable elements and releases stored nuclear energy. In nuclear power plants, that released energy can be used to generate electricity.

The work-energy theorem can be applied to motion along a curved path. A curved path can be treated as many tiny straight paths added together. On each small part, the force can be taken as constant, so the work-energy theorem can be used there. The total result comes from adding the work done along all of those small path segments.
