Randomized Experiments

La randomisation est une méthode statistique qui consiste à assigner au hasard des participants à une expérience ou à un groupe témoin, en supposant que chaque participant a une chance équitable d’être sélectionné.
La randomisation permet d’éviter les biais qui peuvent survenir lors de la sélection des sujets, ou les erreurs accidentelles pendant et après l’expérience.
La méthode de randomisation simple divise les échantillons en deux groupes en lançant une pièce de monnaie ou un dé.
Cependant, les caractéristiques de l’échantillon, telles que le sexe, peuvent affecter les résultats et agir comme une variable bloquante. Dans de tels cas, la randomisation par blocs est utilisée, qui sépare les échantillons en blocs en fonction du sexe. Selon le groupe de traitement, les individus de chaque bloc sont divisés au hasard en petits groupes.
Dans la randomisation stratifiée, les variables pronostiques telles que le sexe et l’indice de masse corporelle sont regroupées et équilibrées. Avec ces deux covariables, six combinaisons ou strates sont possibles. Les individus de ces strates sont ensuite assignés au hasard à un groupe de traitement ou de contrôle.

Un programme informatique et un générateur de nombres aléatoires peuvent être utilisés pour affecter les participants aux groupes de manière à minimiser les biais. Randomisation simple La randomisation simple repose sur une attribution aléatoire basée sur une seule séquence, où l'affectation d'un participant à un groupe est totalement aléatoire. Le lancer de pièce est l'exemple le plus classique et fondamental de cette méthode de randomisation. Randomisation en blocs La randomisation en blocs consiste à assigner aléatoirement les participants à différents groupes tout en garantissant une répartition équilibrée des effectifs dans chaque groupe. Cette méthode assure que la taille des échantillons demeure proportionnée au fil du temps. Chaque bloc est de taille restreinte et équilibrée, avec des affectations de groupe prédéterminées, de sorte que le nombre de participants dans chaque groupe reste similaire. Randomisation stratifiée Dans la randomisation stratifiée, les covariables sont prises en compte et équilibrées afin de garantir une répartition homogène des caractéristiques de base des participants entre les groupes. Cette méthode permet de contrôler l'effet des covariables sur la variable dépendante. Pour ce faire, le chercheur doit identifier les covariables pertinentes et constituer des blocs distincts correspondant aux différentes combinaisons de ces covariables. Une fois les participants regroupés selon ces blocs, une randomisation simple est appliquée au sein de chaque bloc pour affecter les individus à un groupe spécifique.

Random assignment helps researchers place participants into experimental and control groups. It gives each person an equal chance of being assigned to either group. This process is used to reduce selection bias and to balance known and unknown confounding factors, so the control group is as similar to the treatment group as possible.

A computer program or a random number generator can make the assignment process less biased. Simple randomization is the most direct method. It uses a single random sequence, and each person stays completely random in the group assignment. Flipping a coin is the most common example of simple randomization.

Block randomization is used when researchers want equal sample sizes across groups over time. It randomly assigns participants in small, balanced blocks. Each block has predetermined group assignments, so the number of participants in each group stays similar as the study continues.

Stratified randomization keeps baseline characteristics, or covariates, balanced between groups. Researchers first identify the specific covariates they want to control. They then place participants into separate blocks for each combination of covariates. After that, simple randomization is used within each block to assign participants to one of the groups.
