L’équilibre du système n’est pas seulement défini par ses équations mais à l’aide de contraintes. Les contraintes font référence aux restrictions sur le mouvement d’un système.
Si un système est maintenu par un nombre minimum de contraintes pour assurer l’équilibre, on dit qu’il est déterminé statiquement.
Pour un tel système, les supports de réaction inconnus peuvent être estimés à l’aide d’équations d’équilibre.
Si des supports redondants supplémentaires sont ajoutés au système pour maintenir l’équilibre, celui-ci devient statiquement indéterminé. Cela signifie que le nombre de contraintes agissant sur le système est supérieur au nombre d’équations d’équilibre disponibles pour leur solution.
D’autre part, considérons un membre AB relié à deux supports de goupille aux points C et D, de sorte que les lignes d’action des forces réactives soient concurrentes au point C.
La charge appliquée aura tendance à rendre le faisceau partiellement contraint, car l’équation d’équilibre ne sera pas satisfaite pour les conditions de charge.

En génie civil, l'équilibre d'un système est déterminé non seulement par ses équations d'équilibre, mais aussi avec l'aide des contraintes. Les combinaisons appropriées de contraintes peuvent réduire le nombre total de contraintes nécessaires pour maintenir un système en équilibre mécanique. Constraints in structural engineering control how a body can move and help keep it in mechanical equilibrium. A constraint is a restriction on motion. When the right number of constraints is used, the system can stay balanced with the fewest supports needed.

A system with the proper number of supports is called statically determinate. In that case, the unknown reaction forces can be found from equations of equilibrium. These systems are the easiest to analyze and design because the forces can be solved from a fixed set of equilibrium equations.

The usual equilibrium equations include the sum of all forces equal to zero and the sum of all moments equal to zero. If extra, redundant supports are added, the system becomes statically indeterminate. That means there are more constraints than equilibrium equations, so the extra reactions cannot be found from equilibrium alone.

For statically indeterminate systems, the extra equations usually come from deformation. This topic is handled in mechanics of materials. The main challenge is choosing the correct number of redundant supports so the structure stays in equilibrium without becoming overconstrained.

Improper constraints can also create instability. This happens when all reactive forces meet at a single point, pass through a common axis, or become parallel. In those cases, the structure may topple or fail to stay balanced, so engineers avoid these conditions in practice.
