Une poutre est un élément structurel droit et long conçu pour supporter des charges appliquées en divers points le long de l’élément.
Les poutres peuvent être classées en fonction de leur géométrie, de leur section, de leur type de support et de leur condition d’équilibre.
En fonction de la géométrie, les poutres peuvent être droites, effilées ou courbes.
Ils peuvent avoir différentes formes de section transversale, comme une poutre en I, une poutre en T, une poutre en L, une poutre en C ou une poutre rectangulaire.
Selon le support, les poutres peuvent être classées comme simplement soutenues, en porte-à-faux, continues, en porte-à-faux ou fixes. La distance entre ses supports s’appelle la portée de la poutre.
Une poutre simplement supportée est soutenue aux deux extrémités, tandis qu’une poutre en porte-à-faux s’étend au-delà de l’un de ses supports.
La poutre en porte-à-faux est fixée à une extrémité et s’étend à partir de l’extrémité fixe.
Une poutre continue est soutenue en plus de deux points, tandis qu’une poutre fixe peut être fixée aux deux extrémités ou peut être soutenue à une extrémité.
Les réactions au niveau des supports de poutre peuvent être déterminées statiquement si les supports n’impliquent que trois inconnues. S’il y a des inconnues supplémentaires, le faisceau est statiquement indéterminé.

Beams are key parts of structural engineering and construction. They support loads that act at different points along their length. Engineers use beam shape and support conditions to understand how a beam will perform.

Beams can be classified by geometry. Straight beams are the most common and have a constant cross-section along their length. Tapered beams change in cross-section from one end to the other, while curved beams have a curved shape.

Beam cross-section also matters. Common shapes include I-beams, T-beams, L-beams, C-beams, and rectangular beams. Each shape is designed to handle load-bearing needs in a different way, depending on where and how the beam is used.

Supports create another major way to classify beams. A simply supported beam has supports at both ends. An overhanging beam extends beyond one of its supports, while a cantilever beam is fixed at one end and extends outward from that fixed point.

Some beams have more than two supports. A continuous beam has support at more than two points along its length. A fixed beam may be fixed at both ends, or supported at one end and fixed at the other end. The span of a beam is the distance between its supports.

Beam reactions can also be described by equilibrium. A beam is statically determinate if its supports create only three unknowns. If there are more unknowns, the beam is statically indeterminate. This difference is important when analyzing how the beam carries load.
