Titration of a Weak Acid with a Weak Base

Le titrage d’un acide faible comme l’acide acétique avec une base faible comme l’ammoniac aqueux produit un sel d’acétate d’ammonium neutre et de l’eau.
La courbe de titrage de l’acide faible par rapport à la base faible est tracée en mesurant le pH aux différents points du titrage.
Dans le titrage de 100 mL de solution d’acide acétique 0,1 M avec 100 ml d’ammoniac aqueux 0,1 M, le pH initial est de 2,87.
Si l’acide et la base faibles possèdent des valeurs K a et Kb identiques, le pH au point d’équivalence est de 7, ce qui suggère une solution neutre. Si Ka est supérieur à Kb, le pH est inférieur à 7 au point d’équivalence. Alternativement, si Ka est inférieur à Kb, le pH est supérieur à 7.
Le changement de pH pendant toute la courbe de titrage est progressif, sans qu’aucun point final net n’ait été observé. Cependant, un mélange d’indicateurs rouge neutre et bleu de méthylène peut être utilisé pour approximer le point final.

Les acides et bases faibles ne subissent pas complètement de dissociation et les titrages entre ces deux sont rarement étudiés. Lorsque de telles études sont réalisées, par exemple pour le titrage d'un acide faible avec une base faible, la courbe de titrage trace la variation du pH en fonction du volume de base ajouté. Prenons par exemple le titrage de l’acide acétique avec de l’ammoniaque. Lors du titrage, ces deux espèces forment de l'acétate d'ammonium et de l'eau, mais le changement de pH est lent et progressif.

En conséquence, il n’existe pas d’indicateur simple qui change brusquement de couleur pour aider à identifier avec précision le point d’équivalence. Une manière relativement simple d’aborder ce problème consiste à mélanger deux indicateurs – dans ce cas, le rouge neutre et le bleu de méthylène – de telle sorte que le mélange présente un changement de couleur net au point d’équivalence – du bleu violet au vert ici.

Pour un acide faible et une base faible possédant des valeurs Ka et Kb identiques, le pH calculé au point d'équivalence est de 7. Si Ka est supérieur à Kb, le pH est inférieur à 7, ce qui rend la solution de point final acide. Cependant, si Ka est inférieur à Kb, le pH calculé est supérieur à 7, ce qui donne une solution basique au point final.

Weak acid and weak base titration is used to follow how pH changes as base is added. In this kind of titration, both the acid and the base dissociate only partly. The titration curve shows a slow, gradual pH change instead of a sharp jump.

A common example is the titration of acetic acid with ammonia. During the reaction, these two species form ammonium acetate and water. Because the pH changes so gradually, there is no simple indicator that shifts color sharply at the equivalence point.

One practical solution is to mix two indicators, neutral red and methylene blue. The mixed indicator gives a clearer color change at the endpoint, from violet-blue to green. For a weak acid and weak base with the same Ka and Kb values, the pH at the equivalence point is 7. If Ka is greater than Kb, the pH is less than 7 and the endpoint is acidic. If Ka is less than Kb, the pH is greater than 7 and the endpoint is basic.
