Buffers: Buffer Capacity

La capacité tampon, représentée par bêta, est la mesure quantitative de la résistance d'un tampon aux changements de pH lors de l'ajout d'un acide ou d'une base. Il est exprimé en nombre de moles d’acide (Ca) ou de base (Cb) ajoutées à une solution tampon d’un litre avant une modification unitaire du pH.
Plus la capacité du tampon est élevée, plus la capacité du tampon à résister au changement de pH est élevée.
Pour un acide de pKa égal à 5, le nombre de moles de base ajoutées est tracé en fonction du pH. La dérivée de la courbe obtenue montre la capacité tampon la plus élevée lorsque le pH est égal à pKa, où la concentration d’acide faible et sa base conjuguée sont égales dans la solution tampon. Ainsi, la plage de pH effective d’un tampon est supérieure d’une unité à celle de pKa.
En dehors de la plage de pH 3-10, la forte concentration existante d’ions H+ ou OH− résiste au changement de pH de l’acide ou de la base ajouté.
La concentration des espèces tampons dicte proportionnellement la capacité de la zone tampon.

La capacité tampon est la mesure quantitative d’un tampon pour résister au changement de pH. Comme le montre l'équation suivante, la capacité tampon, désignée par « bêta », est exprimée en nombre de moles d'acide ou de base nécessaires pour modifier le pH d'une solution tampon d'un litre d'une unité. Ici, Ca et Cb indiquent respectivement le nombre de moles d’acide et de base. Notez que dpH représente le changement de pH.

Dans le graphique, le pH est tracé en fonction du nombre de moles de base (Cb) ajoutées à un acide faible avec un pKa égal à 5. La dérivée de la courbe donne un autre tracé qui représente la capacité tampon en fonction du pH. Ce graphique démontre que la capacité tampon est la plus élevée lorsque le pH est égal à pKa, où la solution contient une concentration égale de l'acide faible et de sa base conjuguée. Pour cet acide faible, la capacité tampon est la plus élevée à pH 5, là où la résistance aux changements de pH est la plus élevée. Buffer capacity describes how well a buffer resists changes in pH. It is a quantitative measure, so it tells how much acid or base a one-liter buffer solution can take before its pH shifts by 1 unit. In the equation, beta is the buffer capacity, while Ca and Cb represent the moles of acid and base added. The term dpH means the change in pH.

A graph of pH versus the moles of base added to a weak acid with a pKa of 5 shows how buffering works as more base is added. Taking the derivative of that curve gives a second plot, which shows buffer capacity across different pH values. The buffer capacity is highest when pH equals pKa. At that point, the weak acid and its conjugate base are present at equal concentrations.

For this weak acid, the strongest resistance to pH change occurs at pH 5. That is why a buffer should usually have a pKa within plus or minus 1 unit of the target pH. Buffer capacity also depends on how much weak acid and conjugate base are in the solution. Higher concentrations of these buffer species lead to higher buffer capacity.
