Le potentiel et le courant à l’intérieur des cellules à deux électrodes sont généralement mesurés à l’aide d’une combinaison d’une électrode de référence et d’une électrode de travail ou d’une électrode indicatrice.
Dans un test potentiométrique, l'électrode indicatrice répond proportionnellement à la concentration de l'analyte par une réaction d'oxydoréduction.
Les types courants d’électrodes indicatrices comprennent les électrodes métalliques inertes, les électrodes métalliques réactives réversibles et les électrodes à membrane sélectives d’ions.
Les électrodes de référence, comme l’électrode de calomel saturé et l’électrode de chlorure d’argent-argent, ont un potentiel constant à une température donnée, indépendamment des changements dans la composition de l’analyte. Ils fonctionnent mieux lorsque le courant qui les traverse est faible, fournissant un potentiel de référence fixe pour l’électrode indicatrice.

Electrodes are conductive materials in an electrochemical cell. They allow electron transfer reactions to happen at their surfaces. Electrochemical measurements use them to control and measure current and potential.

The working electrode, also called the indicator electrode, is the main sensing electrode. Its potential changes with the analyte concentration and with the activity of the electroactive species. Common indicator electrodes include inert platinum electrodes, silver electrodes that respond to Ag+, halides, and other ions that react with Ag+, and ion-selective electrodes.

The reference electrode provides a constant potential at a constant temperature. It completes the electric circuit and serves as the stable point of comparison for the working electrode. If its potential stays constant, any change in the cell potential can be linked to the working electrode. Common reference electrodes include calomel, silver-silver chloride, and standard hydrogen electrodes.

In dynamic methods, a third electrode may be added. This auxiliary, or counter, electrode also completes the electrical circuit. It helps current flow when the passage of current changes the concentration of species in the electrochemical cell.
