Un titrage redox analyse une réaction d’oxydoréduction qui se produit entre l’analyte et le titrant.
L’analyte doit souvent être traité avec un réactif oxydant ou réducteur auxiliaire pour convertir uniformément l’analyte à l’état d’oxydation unique requis pour le titrage.
La fin de la réaction est détectée à l’aide d’un potentiomètre ou d’un indicateur visuel.
Les indicateurs visuels sont de trois types : les indicateurs redox, les indicateurs d’amidon et les auto-indicateurs.
Les indicateurs redox sont des colorants très colorés présentant des couleurs distinctes dans leurs états oxydés et réduits.
La plupart des indicateurs redox sont sensibles aux changements de potentiel pendant le titrage. Le tracé du potentiel en fonction du volume du titrant génère une courbe de titrage.
Les courbes de titrage redox sont en forme de S et montrent une augmentation constante du potentiel jusqu’à ce qu’un saut soudain soit observé près du point final du titrage.
Les indicateurs d’amidon sont utilisés dans les titrages d’iode, où l’amidon se combine avec l’iode pour former un complexe bleu foncé.
Les auto-indicateurs, qui peuvent agir à la fois comme titrant et comme indicateur, peuvent également être utilisés dans les titrages redox.

Redox Titration: Overview

Le titrage redox est une technique d'analyse chimique utilisée pour déterminer la concentration d'une substance inconnue en mesurant le transfert d'électrons dans une réaction redox (réduction-oxydation). Le processus consiste à ajouter progressivement un titrant ayant une concentration connue d'un agent oxydant ou réducteur à l'analyte, une solution de concentration inconnue, jusqu'à atteindre le point final, indiquant la fin de la réaction entre les deux substances.Il est essentiel de s'assurer que l'analyte est dans un seul état d'oxydation avant le titrage. Cela peut être réalisé en préoxydant ou en préréduisant l'analyte à l'aide d'un réactif auxiliaire.

Les titrages redox utilisent différents types d'indicateurs redox pour déterminer le point final, notamment des colorants changeant de couleur et des méthodes potentiométriques utilisant des électrodes. Les indicateurs redox visuels changent de couleur en fonction de leur état d'oxydation, signalant qu'un certain potentiel redox a été atteint. Redox titration uses electron transfer in a redox, or reduction-oxidation, reaction to find the concentration of an unknown solution. The titrant has a known concentration, and it is added gradually to the analyte, which is the solution being tested. The endpoint shows when the reaction between the two substances is complete.

Before a redox titration begins, the analyte should be in a single oxidation state. If needed, this is done by pre-oxidizing or pre-reducing the sample with an auxiliary reagent. This step helps the titration start from a clear chemical state.

Endpoints in redox titration can be detected with visual indicators or with potentiometric methods. Visual redox indicators change color as their oxidation state changes, which signals that the solution has reached a certain redox potential. Potentiometric methods track the change in electrical potential across the solution using a pH or redox electrode.

Some substances act as self-indicators because their own redox behavior causes a visible color change. In iodometric titrations, starch is a common visual indicator. It forms a dark blue complex when it reacts with iodine.

The best indicator depends on the reaction and on how sensitive and accurate the measurement needs to be. A titration curve is then made by plotting the change in potential or analyte concentration against the volume of titrant added. This curve helps show how the reaction progresses during the analysis.
