L’ampérométrie est une méthode électroanalytique qui permet de mesurer le courant électrique généré au niveau d’une électrode tout en maintenant un potentiel constant.
Le courant produit est proportionnel à la concentration de l’analyte, ce qui permet sa détection et sa quantification.
L’ampérométrie est utilisée dans la construction de capteurs chimiques.
Par exemple, L. C. Clark a mis au point le premier capteur ampérométrique pour mesurer la concentration d’oxygène dissous dans le sang. Enfermé dans une membrane perméable aux gaz, il comprend une cathode de platine et une anode de chlorure d’argent-argent dans une solution de chlorure de potassium comme électrolyte.
Lorsqu’une tension entre la cathode et l’anode est appliquée, les molécules d’oxygène dissoutes diffusent à travers la membrane et subissent une réduction à la surface de la cathode. L’anode fournit les électrons nécessaires à cette réaction, générant un courant électrique proportionnel à la concentration en oxygène dans l’échantillon.

L'ampérométrie est une technique couramment utilisée pour mesurer la concentration d'analytes spécifiques dans une solution en surveillant le courant électrique généré lors d'une réaction électrochimique. Elle consiste à appliquer un potentiel constant entre une électrode de travail et une électrode de référence pour mesurer le courant résultant, qui est proportionnel à la concentration de l'analyte. L'électrode à oxygène Clark fonctionne sur la base de ce principe d'ampérométrie. Elle se compose d'une cathode et d'une anode enfermées dans une membrane perméable aux gaz. En général, la cathode est en platine ou en or, tandis que l'anode est en argent. Amperometry measures specific analytes in a solution by tracking the electric current from an electrochemical reaction. A constant potential is applied between a working electrode and a reference electrode. The current that results is proportional to the analyte concentration.

The Clark oxygen electrode is a common example of amperometry. It uses a cathode and an anode sealed inside a gas-permeable membrane. The cathode is typically platinum or gold, and the anode is silver. When a potential is applied, oxygen diffuses through the membrane and is reduced at the cathode surface. This creates a current that reflects the amount of dissolved oxygen in the sample.

Amperometry is also widely used in blood glucose monitoring. In this biosensor setup, a platinum or gold electrode is coated with the enzyme glucose oxidase. The enzyme catalyzes glucose oxidation and produces gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide. A potential is applied between the enzyme-coated working electrode and a reference electrode. As glucose in the blood sample reacts, hydrogen peroxide forms and is then oxidized at the working electrode. The measured current is directly proportional to the glucose concentration in the blood sample.
