Pour la plupart des applications pratiques, la puissance instantanée variant dans le temps n’est pas une quantité couramment utilisée.
Au lieu de cela, la puissance moyenne est utilisée comme quantité mesurable. Il est calculé en intégrant la puissance instantanée sur la période et en la divisant par la période.
L’expression de la puissance instantanée est substituée et simplifiée pour obtenir une expression dans le domaine temporel de la puissance moyenne.
Le deuxième terme est la valeur moyenne de la fonction cosinus sur une période et est nul.
L’expression finale de la puissance moyenne est indépendante du temps et est proportionnelle à la différence de phase entre la tension et le courant.
Le terme résultant de la moitié du produit de la tension et du courant sous forme de phaseur comprend à la fois des parties réelles et imaginaires.
La comparaison de cette expression de phaseur avec l’équation de la puissance moyenne indique que la pièce réelle correspond à la puissance moyenne.
Dans un circuit purement résistif, la tension et le courant en phase conduisent à une puissance moyenne positive.
Cependant, dans les circuits purement réactifs, un déphasage de quatre-vingt-dix degrés entre la tension et le courant entraîne une puissance moyenne nulle.

En conséquence, l’expression finale de la puissance moyenne est indépendante du temps et dépend de la différence de phase entre la tension et le courant.

En comparant cette expression avec la représentation du phaseur du produit de la tension et du courant, il devient évident que la partie réelle du phaseur correspond à la puissance moyenne.

Dans les circuits purement résistifs, où tension et courant sont parfaitement en phase, la puissance moyenne est positive, ce qui signifie une consommation électrique continue. À l’inverse, la puissance moyenne diminue jusqu’à zéro dans les circuits purement réactifs caractérisés par un déphasage de quatre-vingt-dix degrés entre la tension et le courant. Ce phénomène est attribué au stockage et à la libération cycliques d’énergie, où, en moyenne, aucune énergie nette n’est consommée.
Il est important de reconnaître que même si la puissance instantanée varie en fonction du temps, la puissance moyenne reste constante. Le calcul de la puissance instantanée nécessite une tension et un courant dans le domaine temporel, mais la puissance moyenne peut également être déterminée lorsque la tension et le courant sont représentés dans le domaine fréquentiel à l'aide de phaseurs.
Comprendre la puissance moyenne est essentiel dans les applications pratiques, car cela facilite l'évaluation de la consommation électrique et de l'efficacité, en particulier dans les circuits comportant diverses combinaisons de composants résistifs et réactifs.

Average Power

Power consumption in AC circuits is often described with average power. In practical electrical work, the changing value of instantaneous power is less useful than the average over a time period. Average power is found by integrating instantaneous power over that time and then dividing by the duration.

The time-domain expression for average power comes from simplifying the equation for instantaneous power. In that form, one cosine term averages to zero over a complete cycle. The result does not change with time and depends on the phase difference between voltage and current.

The same result appears in the phasor form of voltage and current. The real part of the phasor product matches the average power. In a purely resistive circuit, voltage and current are in phase, so the average power is positive and the circuit keeps consuming power.

In a purely reactive circuit, voltage and current are ninety degrees apart. In that case, the average power drops to zero because energy is stored and then released in a cycle. Instantaneous power still changes with time, but average power stays constant. It can be calculated from time-domain signals or from phasors in the frequency domain. This makes average power useful for judging power use and efficiency in circuits with resistive and reactive parts.
