Les grandeurs vectorielles sont des grandeurs physiques ayant à la fois une amplitude et une direction.
La norme est la taille ou la quantité d’une quantité, et la direction est l’orientation dans l’espace.
Par exemple, pour ouvrir une porte, une certaine quantité de force est appliquée dans une direction particulière. Par conséquent, la force est une grandeur vectorielle.
Le poids de tout objet, qui est la force exercée sur un corps en raison de la gravité, est une grandeur vectorielle.
Les vecteurs sont représentés par des lettres en italique et en gras surmontées d’une flèche. La magnitude est indiquée par le même symbole vectoriel entre les barres verticales ou en italique.
Géométriquement, les vecteurs sont représentés à l’aide d’une ligne avec une flèche pointant dans leur direction et leur longueur indiquant leur magnitude.
Le déplacement d’un objet d’un point A à B est représenté par une flèche commençant en A et se terminant en B et le vecteur est noté vecteur DAB.

Deux vecteurs sont égaux s’ils ont la même amplitude et la même direction.
La négative d’un vecteur est obtenue en inversant sa direction.
Si deux vecteurs pointent dans la même direction, ils sont parallèles. S’ils pointent dans des directions opposées, ils sont antiparallèles.

Des exemples de quantités vectorielles incluent le déplacement, la vélocité, la position, la force et le couple de rotation. Dans le langage des mathématiques, les quantités vectorielles physiques sont représentées par des objets mathématiques appelés vecteurs. Nous notons les quantités vectorielles par une lettre en italique avec une flèche au-dessus d'elle. Une quantité avec seulement une magnitude et aucune direction est une quantité scalaire. Par conséquent, le poids est une quantité vectorielle, tandis que la masse est une quantité scalaire. Supposez que vous disiez à un ami lors d'un séjour au camping que vous avez découvert un superbe endroit pour pêcher à 6 km de votre tente. Il est peu probable que votre ami puisse trouver facilement l'endroit à moins que vous ne lui donniez également la direction dans laquelle il peut être trouvé depuis votre campement. Vous pouvez dire, par exemple, « Marchez environ 6 km au nord-est de ma tente ». Le concept clé ici est que vous devez donner deux informations, à savoir la distance ou la magnitude (6 km) et la direction (nord-est). Un changement de position, comme de la tente jusqu'au lieu de pêche dans cet exemple, est appelé déplacement. Il s'agit d'un exemple de quantité vectorielle. Géométriquement, les vecteurs sont représentés par des flèches ; leur longueur (qui est un nombre positif) donne la magnitude, indiquée en plaçant la notation de valeur absolue autour du symbole qui désigne le vecteur. La pointe de la flèche indique la direction, et la tête de la flèche marque le point final du vecteur.

Deux vecteurs sont égaux si et seulement s'ils ont des magnitudes égales et la même direction. Deux vecteurs qui ont des directions identiques sont dits des vecteurs parallèles, ce qui signifie qu'ils sont parallèles les uns aux autres. Cependant, si un vecteur pointe dans la direction opposée, qui est exactement de 180° par rapport au premier vecteur, ils sont dits antiparallèles.
