Généralement, la Terre ou les objets stationnaires sur Terre sont utilisés comme cadres de référence. Par exemple, la position d'un avion lors de son décollage pourrait être décrite par rapport à la Terre dans son ensemble ou à la tour de contrôle de l'aéroport. Pour décrire la position d'un objet le long d'un mouvement unidimensionnel, nous utilisons souvent la variable x.
Maintenant, supposons qu'un objet se déplace par rapport à un cadre de référence - par exemple, une voiture se déplace vers la gauche par rapport à un bâtiment, puis la position de la voiture change. Ce changement de position s’appelle le déplacement.
Cependant, la valeur numérique de x le long d'une ligne droite définit la position d'un objet où il pourrait se trouver. Tout changement de position le long de cette droite est indiqué par le déplacement, où Δx est le déplacement et est calculé en soustrayant la position initiale de la position finale. Il s’agit d’une grandeur vectorielle puisqu’elle indique une direction et, selon le choix de la direction positive, elle peut être positive ou négative.

Si un objet se déplace par rapport à un repère, alors la position de l'objet change. Par exemple, si un professeur se déplace vers la droite par rapport à un tableau blanc, la position du professeur a changé. Ce changement de position est appelé déplacement. Le terme déplacement implique qu'un objet s'est déplacé ou a été déplacé. Bien que la position soit la valeur numérique de x le long d'une ligne droite où un objet pourrait se trouver, le déplacement donne le changement de position le long de cette ligne. Comme le déplacement indique la direction, il s'agit d'une grandeur vectorielle et peut être positif ou négatif, selon la direction choisie comme positive.

De plus, une analyse du mouvement peut comporter de nombreux déplacements. Par exemple, si la droite est positive et qu'un objet se déplace de 2 m vers la droite, puis de 4 m vers la gauche, les déplacements individuels sont respectivement de 2 m et -4 m. Le déplacement est représenté par Δx, qui est le changement de position. Nous résolvons toujours le déplacement en soustrayant la position initiale de la position finale.
