Stress-Strain Diagram

Considérons une éprouvette cylindrique placée dans un système pour mesurer sa résistance à la traction.
Deux marques de jauge sont inscrites sur la partie centrale de l’échantillon. La longueur entre les marques est connue sous le nom de longueur de repère.
Ensuite, une charge de traction est appliquée aux deux extrémités de l’éprouvette.
Au fur et à mesure que la charge augmente, la longueur entre deux voies augmente et l’allongement est enregistré pour chaque valeur de charge.
La modification du diamètre de l’éprouvette est également enregistrée simultanément.
La contrainte est calculée en divisant la charge par la section transversale d’origine de l’éprouvette. La déformation est calculée en divisant l’allongement par la longueur entre repères d’origine.
On obtient ensuite un diagramme contrainte-déformation en traçant la déformation sous la forme d’une abscisse et la contrainte sous la forme d’une ordonnée.
On observe que la contrainte varie linéairement avec la déformation lors de la charge initiale. Cependant, à mesure que la charge augmente, de petites modifications de la contrainte entraînent des modifications significatives des valeurs de déformation pour la plupart des matériaux.
En fonction de leur température et de leur vitesse de chargement, les résultats varient pour certains matériaux.

Un diagramme contrainte-déformation est un outil crucial qui affiche graphiquement les caractéristiques mécaniques d'un matériau. Ce diagramme est dérivé d'un essai de traction effectué sur une éprouvette cylindrique soigneusement préparée. Le spécimen porte deux marques de jauge inscrites sur sa partie centrale, et la distance entre ces marques est connue sous le nom de longueur de jauge. L'éprouvette cylindrique est placée dans une machine d'essai, qui applique une charge centrée et croissante. À mesure que cette charge augmente, la longueur de jauge augmente également. Ce changement de longueur, ou allongement, est enregistré pour chaque valeur de la charge à l'aide d'un comparateur. Notamment, les diagrammes contrainte-déformation peuvent varier considérablement selon les différents matériaux. Même au sein d’un même matériau, les résultats peuvent varier en raison de divers facteurs, tels que la température de l’éprouvette au moment du test et la vitesse à laquelle la charge est appliquée.

A stress-strain diagram shows how a material responds during a tensile test. It records the mechanical behavior of a cylindrical specimen as it is pulled by an increasing centric load. The specimen is carefully prepared before testing.

Two gauge marks are inscribed on the central part of the specimen. The distance between these marks is the gauge length. As the load increases, the gauge length also increases. This change in length is called elongation.

The elongation is measured for each load value with a dial gauge. In many cases, a second dial gauge is used at the same time to measure changes in the specimen diameter. Stress is calculated by dividing the load by the original cross-sectional area. Strain is calculated by dividing the elongation by the initial gauge length.

These values are then plotted on a graph. Strain is placed on the horizontal axis, or abscissa, and stress is placed on the vertical axis, or ordinate. The result is the stress-strain diagram. It can differ a lot from one material to another.

Even results from the same material can change under different test conditions. Temperature during testing can affect the outcome. The speed at which the load is applied can also change the diagram.
