Lorsqu’un échantillon est soumis à une charge, la longueur augmente d’abord linéairement à un rythme lent, ce qui entraîne une ligne droite initiale avec une pente raide sur le diagramme contrainte-déformation.
Lorsqu’elle atteint une valeur de contrainte critique, l’éprouvette subit une déformation significative avec une augmentation minimale de la charge appliquée, principalement en raison des contraintes de cisaillement provoquant un glissement le long des surfaces obliques.
Avec l'augmentation de la charge, le diamètre du matériau diminue à un point, appelé rétrécissement. Après la striction, même une petite quantité de charge allonge davantage l’échantillon jusqu’à ce qu’il se rompe.
Le cédage est un processus par lequel le matériau commence à se déformer plastiquement. La contrainte à laquelle commence la déflexion est appelée limite d’élasticité, tandis que la contrainte correspondant à la charge maximale est la résistance ultime et la contrainte à la rupture est la résistance à la rupture.

La ductilité du matériau est mesurée en pourcentage d’allongement ou en pourcentage de réduction de la section transversale. En cas de compression, les courbes de contrainte-déformation des matériaux ductiles divergent à des contraintes plus élevées, car il n'y a pas de striction.

La relation contrainte-déformation dans les matériaux ductiles tels que l'acier de construction ou l'aluminium est complexe et passe par plusieurs étapes. Lorsqu'un échantillon est chargé, il présente initialement une augmentation linéaire de sa longueur, représentée par une ligne droite raide sur le diagramme contrainte-déformation. Cela indique que le matériau se déforme élastiquement et reprendra sa forme originale une fois déchargé. Cependant, lorsqu’une valeur de contrainte critique est atteinte, la déformation plastique commence. Cette étape voit une déformation importante avec une faible augmentation de la charge appliquée, principalement en raison des contraintes de cisaillement facilitant le glissement le long des surfaces obliques du matériau. À mesure que la charge augmente, le diamètre du matériau diminue à un certain point, appelé striction. Après la striction, même un léger incrément de charge qui étire considérablement l'éprouvette peut causer sa rupture.

Dans ce contexte, la limite d'élasticité est la déformation plastique initiant la contrainte. Il est intéressant de noter que le diagramme contrainte-déformation de l'acier de construction reste stable après l'élasticité en raison de l'écrouissage, contrairement à l'aluminium, qui voit la contrainte non linéaire augmenter après l'élasticité. Enfin, la ductilité, indiquant une déformation plastique significative avant rupture, est mesurée par le pourcentage d'allongement ou de réduction de la surface de la section transversale. Sous compression, les courbes contrainte-déformation des matériaux ductiles divergent à des déformations élevées car aucune striction ne se produit.

Ductile materials such as structural steel and aluminium show a multi-stage stress-strain response. When a specimen is loaded, its length first increases linearly at a slow rate. This produces a steep straight line on the stress-strain diagram. That initial part shows elastic deformation, which means the material returns to its original shape after unloading.

When the stress reaches a critical value, plastic deformation begins. In this stage, the material changes shape a lot while the applied load increases only a little. Shearing stresses help this process by allowing slippage along oblique surfaces in the material.

As loading continues, the specimen may start to narrow in diameter. This is called necking. After necking begins, even a small increase in load can stretch the specimen greatly until it finally ruptures.

The diagram also identifies key strength values. Yield strength is the stress that starts plastic deformation. Ultimate strength is the maximum load the material can carry before necking. Breaking strength is the stress at rupture. Structural steel often shows a steady post-yield region because of strain-hardening, while aluminium shows a non-linear stress increase after yield. Ductility is the ability to undergo large plastic deformation before rupture, and it is measured by percent elongation or reduction in cross-sectional area. Under compression, the stress-strain curves of ductile materials differ at high strains because necking does not occur.
