La contrainte d’ingénierie est le rapport entre la charge et la section transversale d’origine non déformée. La contrainte d’ingénierie se rapproche de la déformation qui représente le matériau sous charge, ce qui est pertinent pour les matériaux ductiles après l’élasticité.
Les diagrammes contrainte-déformation d’ingénierie sont souvent utilisés pour des raisons de commodité, mais un véritable diagramme contrainte-déformation fournit une représentation plus précise, en particulier avec des déformations importantes.
La contrainte réelle est calculée en divisant la charge par la section transversale de l’éprouvette à l’instant particulier de la déformation. À mesure que la charge augmente, la section transversale diminue, ce qui reflète une véritable contrainte.
Pendant la phase de striction, la contrainte réelle, qui est proportionnelle à la charge mais inversement proportionnelle à la surface, ne cesse d’augmenter jusqu’à la rupture de l’éprouvette.
La déformation vraie utilise des valeurs de longueur successives enregistrées. Chaque incrément de la distance entre les repères, divisé par la longueur correspondante, donne la déformation élémentaire.
La déformation vraie est la somme de toutes les valeurs de déformation élémentaires, reflétant plus précisément le comportement du matériau.
Contrairement aux tracés contrainte-déformation d’ingénierie, les diagrammes de contrainte réelle par rapport à la contrainte réelle restent cohérents pendant la striction et entre les essais de traction et de compression.

True Stress and True Strain

La contrainte technique est calculée comme la charge divisée par la section transversale d'origine non déformée. Il se rapproche d'un matériau sous charge. Cette approximation est particulièrement pertinente après la limite d'élasticité dans les matériaux ductiles. Bien que les diagrammes techniques contrainte-déformation soient souvent utilisés pour leur commodité et leur accessibilité, ils peuvent parfois manquer de précision, en particulier lorsqu'il s'agit de valeurs de déformation élevées.

En revanche, le stress réel offre une représentation plus précise. Elle est calculée en divisant la charge appliquée par la section transversale instantanée de l'éprouvette pendant la déformation. À mesure que la charge augmente, la section transversale diminue, ce qui se reflète avec précision dans la valeur réelle de la contrainte. Pendant la phase de striction, la contrainte réelle continue d'augmenter car elle est proportionnelle à la charge tout en étant inversement proportionnelle à la surface, et cela continue jusqu'à ce que l'éprouvette finisse par se rompre.

Le concept de déformation réelle améliore encore cette représentation précise. Il considère les valeurs de longueur enregistrées successives. Chaque incrément de la distance entre les repères est divisé par sa longueur correspondante pour obtenir la déformation élémentaire. La véritable déformation est l'accumulation de ces valeurs de déformation élémentaires, reflétant précisément le comportement du matériau. Contrairement aux diagrammes contrainte-déformation d'ingénierie, les diagrammes contrainte réelle/déformation réelle maintiennent la cohérence pendant la phase de striction et lors de divers tests, tels que les tests de traction et de compression.

Stress-strain curves beyond yield show how ductile materials behave after they start to deform permanently. Engineering stress is found by dividing the load by the original, undeformed cross-sectional area. It is a useful approximation, but it can lose accuracy when strain becomes large.

True stress gives a more exact picture of the same specimen under load. It is calculated by dividing the applied load by the instantaneous cross-sectional area during deformation. As the specimen stretches, its area decreases, and true stress reflects that change. During necking, true stress continues to rise because it depends on the load and the shrinking area, and it keeps rising until rupture.

True strain adds another layer of accuracy by using successive length measurements. Each small increase between gauge marks is divided by its current length to find an elementary strain. The true strain is the sum of these small strain values, so it tracks material behavior more precisely. Unlike engineering stress-strain diagrams, true stress versus true strain diagrams stay consistent during necking and also work well in tensile and compressive tests.
