La déformation d’une tige avec différents matériaux et sections est calculée en la divisant en parties, chacune caractérisée par des paramètres individuels.
Ensuite, la déformation de chaque pièce est calculée, et la déformation totale de la barre est calculée en additionnant la déformation de chaque pièce.
Lorsqu’une extrémité de la tige est fixe, la déformation est égale au déplacement de son extrémité libre. Mais, lorsque les deux extrémités de la tige se déplacent, la déformation est mesurée par le déplacement relatif d’une extrémité par rapport à l’autre.
Considérons un assemblage de trois barres élastiques reliées par une goupille rigide au point O. Si une charge est appliquée à l’extrémité libre de la barre 1, chaque barre se déformera.
Pour les barres 2 et 3, fixées à des supports fixes B et C, la déformation commune est mesurée par le déplacement du point O.
Pour la mesure 1, où les deux extrémités se déplacent, la déformation est mesurée par la différence entre les déplacements des points O et A.

Or, lorsque les deux extrémités d'une tige bougent, la déformation se mesure par le déplacement relatif d'une extrémité par rapport à l'autre. Calculating rod stretch from mixed loads starts with breaking the rod into parts. This step is needed when the rod is made of different materials or has changes in cross-section. Each part has its own internal force, cross-sectional area, length, and modulus of elasticity.

These values are used to find the deformation of the full rod. For a member with a variable cross-section, the strain is not constant. Instead, it changes with position along the rod. The deformation of a small element is written first, and the total deformation is found by integrating that expression over the full length.

The meaning of deformation also depends on how the rod is supported. If one end is fixed, the deformation is the displacement of the free end. If both ends move, the deformation is measured as the relative displacement of one end compared with the other.

This idea also applies to a system of three elastic bars connected by a rigid pin. When a load is applied at one point, each bar deforms. For the bars attached to fixed supports, the common deformation is measured by the displacement of a chosen point. For the bar with moving ends, deformation is the difference between the displacements of the two points.
