Lorsqu’une barre mince est soumise à une charge axiale, le matériau de la barre subit une déformation axiale, ce qui le déforme dans le sens axial.
Simultanément, le matériau subit également une déformation latérale, se déformant dans des directions perpendiculaires à la charge axiale.
Le matériau est supposé être homogène et isotrope, ce qui rend ses propriétés mécaniques indépendantes de la position et de la direction. Ainsi, la déformation dans n’importe quelle direction transversale doit avoir la même valeur.
Le coefficient de Poisson est une constante fondamentale définie comme le rapport négatif de la déformation latérale et de la déformation axiale induite par la charge appliquée pour un matériau donné.
Le signe négatif utilisé est d'obtenir une valeur positive pour le coefficient de Poisson puisque les déformations axiales et latérales ont des signes opposés.
Les matériaux avec un rapport de Poisson élevé ont tendance à subir une plus grande contraction latérale lorsqu'ils sont soumis à des charges axiales, tandis que ceux avec un faible rapport ont tendance à être moins affectés.
Par exemple, le caoutchouc a un coefficient de Poisson proche de 0,5, ce qui signifie qu'il subit presque autant de contraction latérale que d'allongement axial.

Poisson's Ratio

Poisson's ratio describes how a material changes shape when it is pulled or compressed along one direction. It links the strain in the direction of the force to the strain that happens sideways. When a slender bar is loaded axially, it stretches along the load and contracts laterally.

Poisson's ratio is defined as the negative ratio of lateral contraction to axial elongation. The negative sign is used because the two strains usually have opposite signs. This keeps the ratio positive and makes it easier to compare materials.

The value of Poisson's ratio affects how a material behaves under stress. Materials with high Poisson's ratios, such as rubber, can contract sideways almost as much as they elongate lengthwise. Rubber has a Poisson's ratio near 0.5.

Knowing this ratio helps predict how much a material will compress in the lateral direction when an axial load is applied. That prediction is useful in design because it helps structures handle expected stresses and avoid failure. Some anisotropic materials have different Poisson's ratios in different directions, and cork is known to have a zero Poisson ratio in one direction.
