Une barre mince soumise à une charge axiale subit une déformation dans les directions axiale et transversale. La déformation affecte les éléments cubiques qu’il contient.
En fonction de son orientation, le cube se transforme en parallélépipède rectangulaire ou en losange, ce qui entraîne une déformation par cisaillement.
La charge axiale sur l’élément entraîne une combinaison de cisaillement et de déformations normales.
L’application d’une charge axiale déclenche des contraintes normales et de cisaillement sur les éléments orientés à un angle de 45 degrés par rapport à l’axe de charge.
L’élément cubique, lorsqu’il est coupé avec un plan diagonal, forme un élément prismatique. L’élément prismatique modifie ses angles et ses côtés internes de manière proportionnelle aux contraintes générées par la charge.
En appliquant la formule de la tangente de la différence de deux angles, on détermine la relation entre la déformation de cisaillement maximale et la déformation axiale.
À partir de la loi de Hooke, la relation entre les constantes est obtenue. Une constante peut être déterminée à partir des deux autres.

La déformation se produit dans les directions axiale et transversale lorsqu'une charge axiale est appliquée à une barre mince. Cette déformation impacte l'élément cubique à l'intérieur de la barre, le transformant soit en parallélépipède rectangle, soit en rhomboïde, en fonction de son orientation. Ce processus de transformation induit une déformation de cisaillement. Le chargement axial provoque à la fois des déformations de cisaillement et normales. L'application d'une charge axiale provoque des contraintes normales et de cisaillement égales sur les éléments orientés à un angle de 45° par rapport à l'axe de la charge. Il est important de noter que la déformation de cisaillement atteint son niveau maximum dans cette orientation particulière.

Axial load effects on shear strain are shown by how a slender bar deforms under tension or compression. When the bar is loaded along its axis, it changes in both the axial direction and the transverse direction. A small cubic element inside the bar can turn into a rectangular parallelepiped or a rhombus, depending on how it is oriented.

This change in shape creates shearing strain, which is the distortion caused when angles in a material change. Axial loading produces both normal strain and shearing strain. For an element placed at 45° to the load axis, the normal stress and shearing stress are equal. The shearing strain is also at its maximum at this orientation.

If a diagonal plane cuts through the cubic element, a prismatic element is formed. This element changes its sides and internal angles in response to the load-induced strains. The result shows how stress affects the structural form of the element under axial loading.

The maximum shearing strain can be related to axial strain by using the tangent of the difference between two angles. This relationship helps explain how the two strain types interact. Hooke's law links the material constants, so one constant can be found if the other two are known. That connection is key to understanding how a material responds to stress and strain.
