Lorsqu’un matériau est soumis à une contrainte uniaxiale, le matériau subit un allongement ou une contraction dans la direction de la contrainte appliquée.
Dans le même temps, la déformation se produit dans le sens transversal à la contrainte appliquée, régie par le coefficient de Poisson.
La déformation dans la direction transversale entraînera soit une dilatation, soit une contraction au-dessus et au-dessous de la surface neutre.
L’expansion et la contraction dans la direction transversale verticale se compensent et disparaissent.
Pour la direction transversale horizontale, l’expansion et la contraction se traduiront par diverses lignes horizontales de la section, qui sont pliées en arcs circulaires.
Le rayon de courbure de la surface neutre peut être exprimé comme le rapport du rayon de courbure dû à la flexion au coefficient de Poisson du matériau.
Ce rayon de courbure correspond au cercle dont le centre se situe de l’autre côté du rayon de courbure dû à la flexion.
L’inverse du rayon de courbure de la surface neutre représente la courbure de la section transversale et est connue sous le nom de courbure anticlastique.

La flexion dans les deux sens est liée au coefficient de Poisson du matériau. Le rayon de courbure de ces arcs, particulièrement visible loin de la surface neutre, est inversement proportionnel au coefficient de Poisson.

Poisson effects in beam bending describe how a material changes shape in directions perpendicular to the applied force. When a material is under uniaxial stress, it stretches or contracts along the load and also changes in the crosswise directions. Poisson's ratio, written as v, measures the ratio of transverse strain to axial strain.

As the material stretches, it may expand or contract in directions orthogonal to the load. These changes are not the same in every part of the material. In the vertical transverse direction, the expansions and contractions cancel on the neutral surface, where there is no longitudinal stress.

The horizontal transverse direction behaves differently. There, the sections bend into circular arcs because the expansions and contractions vary across the thickness of the material. These arcs are centered at point O' and have radius of curvature r'. The beam's own bending arc is centered at point O and has radius of curvature r.

This two-direction bending is tied to Poisson's ratio. The curvature seen in the transverse section is called anticlastic curvature. Away from the neutral surface, the radius of these arcs is inversely proportional to Poisson's ratio. Together, these changes show how a beam bends not only along its length, but also across its cross section.
