Considérons un élément constitué d’un matériau élastoplastique de section rectangulaire. À l’intérieur de la limite élastique, la répartition des contraintes sur la section est linéaire.
Au fur et à mesure que le moment de flexion augmente, la contrainte maximale dans l’élément augmente. Le moment de flexion maximal est observé lorsque la déformation de l’élément reste entièrement élastique.
Le moment élastique maximal de la section peut être calculé en substituant le rapport entre le moment d’inertie et la longueur de la section.
Avec une nouvelle augmentation du moment de flexion, la déformation plastique se produit uniformément mais avec une amplitude de contraintes opposées dans les zones supérieure et inférieure. Les noyaux élastiques sont présents dans les zones plastiques, et la contrainte pour les noyaux élastiques varie linéairement avec l’épaisseur. 
Le moment de flexion correspondant à la contrainte à l’intérieur des noyaux élastiques peut être estimé analytiquement à l’aide de l’équation du moment élastique maximal.
Au fur et à mesure que le moment de flexion augmente jusqu’à la valeur limite, la déformation devient entièrement plastique et le moment plastique de l’élément est exprimé en termes de moment élastique maximal.

Le comportement des matériaux élastoplastiques soumis à des contraintes de flexion, en particulier dans les éléments structurels à sections rectangulaires, est crucial pour prédire les réponses des matériaux et comprendre les modes de rupture. La dernière étape de la réponse à la flexion se produit lorsque la déformation sur l'ensemble de la section transversale devient entièrement plastique, appelée moment plastique. Ce moment est le maximum que la section peut supporter et est nettement supérieur à la limite élastique. Le moment plastique est calculé en supposant une répartition uniforme des contraintes à la limite d'élasticité sur toute la section.

Elastoplastic members under bending show a clear change in stress as the load increases. For a rectangular cross-section, the first response is elastic. The stress follows Hooke's Law and forms a linear pattern across the section.

In this early stage, stress grows from the neutral axis to the outer fibers. The outer fibers reach the elastic limit first because they carry the highest stress. The inner part of the section stays elastic while the bending moment remains in this range.

When the bending moment becomes larger, the outer fibers begin to yield. Plastic zones then form at the top and bottom of the section. A smaller elastic core still remains in the middle, and stress there continues to vary linearly across the reduced thickness.

The bending moment in this mixed stage can still be studied by adjusting the elastic stress calculation for the smaller effective area. As loading continues, the whole cross-section can become fully plastic. That final condition is called the plastic moment, and it is the maximum moment the section can carry. It is much higher than the elastic limit and is found by assuming a uniform stress distribution at the yield stress across the entire section.
