Considérons un membre ayant un plan de symétrie avec une charge appliquée le long du plan de symétrie.
Les forces internes à l'intérieur de la section sont représentées par une force agissant au centre de gravité de la section et un couple agissant dans le plan de l'élément.
La section transversale est en équilibre lorsque la force interne est égale à la charge appliquée, et que le moment de couple est égal et opposé au moment généré en raison de la charge appliquée.
La distribution des contraintes dues à la charge excentrique peut être écrite comme la somme des contraintes dues aux charges centrales et de la distribution linéaire des contraintes dues aux couples de flexion excentriques.
Cette expression montre que la distribution des contraintes sur la section transversale est linéaire mais non uniforme.
Cette analyse est valable lorsque les contraintes sont dans la limite proportionnelle, que la déformation due à la flexion ne fait pas varier le bras de moment et que la section transversale est prise en compte aux parties droites de l’élément.

Eccentric Axial Loading in a Plane of Symmetry

Eccentric axial loading happens when an axial load is applied away from the centroidal axis of a structural member. In engineering, this can happen when parts are not directly aligned because of design or function. The load then creates both a direct axial force and a bending effect.

The offset load produces a moment, or turning effect, that acts like a couple and must be balanced to keep the member in equilibrium. The internal stress across the cross-section is therefore a mix of uniform stress from the axial load and changing stress from the bending moment. This makes the stress distribution linear across the section.

Because the stress changes from one side of the centroid to the other, one side of the member is in compression and the opposite side is in tension. The analysis assumes the material stays within its elastic limit. It also assumes the deformation is small enough that it does not significantly change the load’s offset.

This method is mainly used for straight, unwarped parts of a member. It is important in structural design because components can face unusual loading arrangements. Understanding eccentric axial loading helps engineers check whether a member will remain stable and structurally sound.
