Les couples appliqués entraînent également une réduction de la longueur de la surface supérieure et une augmentation de la longueur de la surface inférieure de l’élément, ce qui implique qu’il existe une surface de longueur inchangée connue sous le nom d’axe neutre.
La déformation de l'arc V' W' qui se trouve à une distance y de la surface neutre s'exprime comme une variation de la longueur de l'arc.
À l’aide de la géométrie, la déformation peut être réécrite en termes de rayon de courbure de la surface neutre.
La déformation est donnée en divisant la déformation par sa longueur d’origine, ce qui montre que la déformation varie de manière non linéaire avec la distance y de la surface neutre.

Curved beams and arches bend in a way that changes both their shape and their strain pattern. When a curved member that is symmetric about the y-axis is loaded by equal and opposite forces, its circular shape deforms and the center of curvature moves from C to C'. The new curve is tighter than the original one.

A key idea in this bending analysis is the neutral axis. The neutral axis is a hypothetical line inside the material whose length does not change during bending. It does not experience tensile strain or compressive strain, so it acts as the reference line for the deformation.

Strain at any point in the curved member depends on how far that point is from the neutral axis. The upper surface shortens, while the lower surface elongates as the member bends. Because of this change in length, strain varies across the thickness of the member and is not distributed evenly. The farther a point is from the neutral axis, the greater the effect of the curvature change.
