Considérons une poutre simplement supportée portant une charge uniformément répartie de son point médian à son support droit.
Pour déterminer le moment de flexion dans les poutres à l’aide de fonctions de singularité, le diagramme du corps libre de la poutre est tracé en remplaçant la charge distribuée par une charge concentrée équivalente.
Les moments sont ensuite additionnés autour du support de droite pour obtenir l’équation du moment total afin de déterminer l’intensité de la force de réaction.
Ensuite, la poutre est coupée en un point situé entre le support gauche et le point médian. D’après son schéma à corps libre, le moment de flexion est exprimé par une fonction spécifique en considérant l’intervalle.
Maintenant, la poutre est coupée en un point entre le point médian et le support droit. Le schéma de corps libre de cette portion est dessiné, en remplaçant la charge répartie par une charge concentrée équivalente, et le moment de flexion est exprimé par une fonction différente en considérant l’intervalle.
Ces deux fonctions sont combinées en une seule expression représentant le moment de flexion en n’importe quel point de la poutre. L’expression entre crochets pour différentes conditions est appelée fonction de singularité.

Singularity Functions for Bending Moment

Les fonctions de singularité simplifient la représentation des moments de flexion dans les poutres soumises à un chargement discontinu, permettant l'utilisation d'une seule expression mathématique. Pour une poutre supportée AB, avec une charge uniforme depuis son milieu M jusqu'à l'extrémité droite B, l'approche implique des « coupes » conceptuelles en des points spécifiques pour déterminer le moment de flexion dans chaque segment. En coupant la poutre en un point compris entre A et M, le moment de flexion du segment avant d'atteindre le point médian M est représenté à l'aide d'une fonction particulière.

Une autre coupe en un point entre M et B permet de décrire le moment de flexion du segment allant du milieu M à l'extrémité de la poutre par une fonction différente. La clé pour simplifier la représentation consiste à combiner ces fonctions en une seule expression qui s'adapte en fonction de la position le long de la poutre.

Où w0 est la charge répartie appliquée sur la longueur de M jusqu’à l’extrémité de la poutre. L'expression est formée en incluant la deuxième fonction dans les calculs uniquement pour les positions au-delà du point médian M, en utilisant efficacement une approche conditionnelle pour gérer la discontinuité. De plus, la répartition de la charge le long de la poutre et la force de cisaillement qui en résulte peuvent également être représentées à l'aide de fonctions de singularité. Cette méthode, qui utilise souvent les supports de Macaulay pour la représentation, rationalise le calcul des moments de flexion dans les poutres soumises à des conditions de chargement variables.

Singularity functions help model beam loads and bending moments when the loading changes along the beam. They make it possible to write the bending moment with one mathematical expression instead of separate equations for each section. In this method, Macaulay’s brackets are often used to show where a load starts or stops.

For a simply supported beam AB, the load is uniform from the midpoint M to the right support B. To find the bending moment, the beam is cut at different points. A cut between A and M gives the moment expression for the left segment before the midpoint. Another cut between M and B gives the moment expression for the right segment after the load begins.

These segment equations are then combined into a single form that changes with position along the beam. The second term is included only for points beyond midpoint M, so the formula handles the discontinuity in the load. The distributed load is written as w0 over the length from M to B, and the same singularity function idea can also be used to show the load pattern and the shear force.
