Considérons un point d’un cube soumis à une contrainte plane, définie par ses composantes de contrainte.
Si l’élément tourne d’un angle, ses composantes de contrainte changent. Ce changement est déterminé en considérant un élément prismatique dont les faces sont perpendiculaires à ses axes.
En considérant l’aire de la face oblique, les aires des faces verticales et horizontales peuvent être calculées à l’aide des fonctions trigonométriques de l’angle de rotation.
Les forces exercées sur ces faces sont représentées, et on suppose qu’aucune force n’agit sur les faces triangulaires de l’élément. Les équations d’équilibre sont ensuite écrites à l’aide de composantes le long des axes de rotation.
En résolvant ces équations, les contraintes normales et de cisaillement sont dérivées. Les contraintes normales et de cisaillement sont ensuite réexprimées à l’aide de relations trigonométriques.
Une expression de la contrainte normale sur l’axe vertical pivoté est obtenue en remplaçant l’angle de rotation dans l’une des expressions précédentes par un nouvel angle.
On observe que la somme des contraintes normales exercées sur un élément cubique reste indépendante de l'orientation de l'élément.

Une nouvelle expression de la contrainte normale sur l'axe vertical tourné est obtenue en remplaçant l'angle de rotation dans une expression précédente par un nouveau.

Un résultat notable de cette analyse est que la somme des contraintes normales ne change pas quelle que soit l’orientation de l’élément cubique. Cette invariance met en évidence la réponse isotrope du matériau aux contraintes externes et est cruciale pour prédire le comportement du matériau dans différentes conditions de chargement. Comprendre comment les composants de contrainte se transforment avec l'orientation des éléments est essentiel pour prédire les modes de rupture des matériaux et concevoir des matériaux et des structures plus résilients aux charges appliquées.

Transformation of Plane Stress

Plane stress changes with rotation in a material element. The analysis looks at a prismatic element inside a cube under plane stress. As the element turns, the normal stress and shearing stress on its faces change in both size and direction.

These changes are described with trigonometric functions of the rotation angle. The forces on the rotated faces are compared with the forces on the original faces that are perpendicular to each principal axis. The equilibrium equations use only the forces on those perpendicular faces, not the forces on the triangular faces created by the rotation.

From this balance, the new stress components can be written in terms of the original stresses. The normal stress on the rotated vertical axis is also found by using a new angle in a previous expression. One important result is that the sum of the normal stresses stays the same, no matter how the cubic element is oriented.

This invariant sum shows the material’s isotropic response to external stress. It helps explain how stress components shift as orientation changes. That understanding is important for predicting failure modes and for designing materials and structures that can better handle applied loads.
