Une diode est polarisée en inverse lorsque la borne positive d'une source de tension externe est connectée au matériau de type N et la borne négative au matériau de type P. Cette configuration s'oppose à la direction naturelle du flux de courant à travers la diode, augmentant ainsi la largeur de la région d'appauvrissement et le potentiel de barrière. La condition de polarisation inverse produit un courant de fuite minimal, principalement dû aux porteurs de charge minoritaires. Cette fuite devient significative lorsque la tension inverse dépasse la tension thermique dans des conditions ambiantes standard, conduisant à une courbe de réponse courant-tension (I-V) aplatie. Contrairement à l’augmentation exponentielle du courant observée dans la polarisation directe, l’augmentation de la polarisation inverse est négligeable.
Cependant, en pratique, le courant inverse dans les diodes dépasse souvent le courant de saturation prévu. Par exemple, les diodes conçues pour les petits signaux avec des courants de saturation inverses de niveau femtoampère peuvent présenter des courants inverses de niveau nanoampère. Bien que ce courant inverse augmente légèrement avec la tension inverse, ces changements sont trop faibles pour affecter sensiblement la courbe I-V. Ce courant inverse provient de la génération de porteurs thermiques au sein de la jonction, en fonction des dimensions physiques de la jonction de diode.
Une forte augmentation du courant inverse se produit lorsque la tension inverse appliquée atteint un seuil critique appelé tension de claquage, propre à chaque diode. Ce phénomène, représenté par le genou sur la courbe I-V, signifie une augmentation substantielle du courant avec une augmentation minimale de la tension.

Il est essentiel de reconnaître que la panne de diode n'est pas intrinsèquement dommageable, à condition que le courant reste dans sa zone de fonctionnement sûre, généralement définie par sa capacité maximale de dissipation de puissance dans la fiche technique. Des circuits externes, conçus pour limiter le courant inverse à des niveaux sûrs, sont nécessaires pour éviter des dommages potentiels. Les diodes Zener, conçues pour fonctionner dans la zone de claquage pour la régulation de la tension, sont des exemples de diodes qui fonctionnent en toute sécurité dans ces conditions.

A diode in reverse bias blocks current flow and widens its depletion region. In this setup, the positive terminal of the power source connects to the n-type material, and the negative terminal connects to the p-type material. The reverse connection also raises the barrier potential, so current stays very small.

The small reverse current is called leakage current. It comes mainly from minority charge carriers. At room temperature, once the reverse voltage is above the thermal voltage, the diode’s I-V curve becomes nearly flat, unlike the steep rise seen in forward bias.

Real diodes often show more reverse current than the ideal saturation current predicts. Small-signal diodes with femtoampere-level reverse saturation current may still measure nanoampere-level reverse current. This current can rise a little as reverse voltage increases, but the change is usually too small to affect the I-V curve much. It comes from thermal carrier generation in the junction and depends on the junction’s physical size.

A sharp increase in reverse current begins at the breakdown voltage. This is the critical reverse voltage where the I-V curve shows a knee and current rises quickly with little extra voltage. Breakdown is not always damaging if the current stays within the diode’s safe operating area, which is usually tied to the maximum power dissipation listed in the datasheet. External circuitry is used to keep reverse current safe, and Zener diodes are designed to work in the breakdown region for voltage regulation.
