Les diodes à barrière Schottky sont des dispositifs semi-conducteurs formés en assemblant une couche métallique avec un matériau semi-conducteur de type n modérément dopé.
Lorsqu’un métal entre en contact avec un semi-conducteur, le transfert de charge aligne les niveaux de Fermi.
Si le niveau initial de Fermi du semi-conducteur est supérieur au niveau de Fermi pré-contact du métal, il augmente son potentiel, formant une région d'appauvrissement associée à la barrière de Schottky.
Avec les semi-conducteurs de type n, cette région contient des charges positives provenant d'ions donneurs non compensés, s'alignant avec les charges négatives du métal.
Avec les semi-conducteurs de type p, le processus est inversé, ce qui conduit à une région d'appauvrissement avec des charges négatives pour correspondre aux charges positives du métal.
La jonction métal-semi-conducteur se comporte comme une diode, permettant un flux de courant unidirectionnel de l’anode métallique à la cathode semi-conductrice tout en agissant comme un circuit ouvert dans l’autre sens.
Les diodes Schottky conduisent principalement le courant à travers des porteurs majoritaires et n’ont pas d’effets de stockage de charge de porteurs minoritaires, ce qui les rend plus rapides pour les applications de commutation.
Leur chute de tension directe conductrice est inférieure à celle des diodes à jonction pn, ce qui réduit la dissipation de puissance.
Les diodes Schottky sont utilisées pour le serrage de tension et la protection contre les transitoires en raison de leur faible tension directe et de leur réponse rapide.

Schottky barrier diodes use a metal-semiconductor junction to control current flow. They are built by combining a metal layer with a moderately doped n-type semiconductor. This contact creates the Schottky barrier, which gives the diode its one-way current behavior.

When the metal touches the semiconductor, charge transfer occurs. The Fermi levels of the two materials align, and a depletion region forms near the contact area. In an n-type semiconductor, this region contains uncompensated positive donor ions. In a p-type semiconductor, the depletion region contains negative charges, which also helps define the direction of current flow.

Schottky diodes differ from conventional pn-junction diodes in speed and efficiency. They mainly use majority carriers, so they do not store minority-carrier charge. That makes them much faster for switching applications. They also have a lower forward voltage drop than pn-junction diodes, which reduces power loss during operation.

These properties make Schottky barrier diodes useful in circuits that need fast response and low power dissipation. Common uses include voltage clamping and transient protection. Their quick switching and low forward voltage make them important parts of modern electronic circuit design.
