Dans tout système LTI, la convolution de deux signaux est notée à l’aide d’un opérateur de convolution, en supposant que toutes les conditions initiales sont nulles.
L’intégrale de convolution est divisée en deux parties : l’entrée zéro ou réponse naturelle et l’état zéro ou réponse forcée du système, t0 indiquant le temps initial.
L’intégrale de convolution peut être simplifiée en supposant que le signal d’entrée et la réponse impulsionnelle sont tous deux nuls pour des valeurs de temps négatives.
La convolution graphique comporte quatre étapes : pliage, décalage, multiplication et intégration. Considérons un circuit RC avec un signal d’impulsion d’entrée et une réponse de sortie spécifiés. Initialement, le pliage est effectué en créant une image miroir du signal d’entrée le long de l’axe y. Ceci est suivi d’un léger décalage, d’une multiplication et d’une intégration des signaux résultants. La circonvolution résultante est représentée graphiquement.
Dans la convolution en temps discret, la réponse est déterminée en appliquant une entrée à un système à temps discret et en utilisant la réponse impulsionnelle et l’intégrale de convolution.
La convolution du signal d’entrée discret et de la réponse impulsionnelle forme la somme de convolution de la réponse du système.

Dans un premier temps, le repliement est effectué en créant une image miroir du signal d'entrée le long de l'axe des y. Cette opération est suivie d’un décalage, où le signal replié est glissé le long de l'axe du temps. Ensuite, la multiplication des signaux repliés et décalés est effectuée point par point. Enfin, l'intégration du signal résultant au fil du temps fournit le résultat de la convolution. Ce processus peut être représenté graphiquement.

Dans la convolution à temps discret, la réponse du système est déterminée en appliquant une entrée à un système à temps discret et en utilisant la réponse impulsionnelle et la somme de convolution. La convolution du signal d'entrée discret x[n] et de la réponse impulsionnelle h[n] forme la somme de convolution pour la réponse du système :

Convolution describes how a linear time-invariant, or LTI, system responds to an input signal. In an LTI system, the convolution of two signals is written with a convolution operator. The method assumes that all initial conditions are zero.

The convolution integral can be split into two parts. These are the zero-input response, also called the natural response, and the zero-state response, also called the forced response. The initial time is marked as t0. To make the integral easier to work with, both the input signal and the impulse response are taken to be zero for negative time values.

Graphical convolution follows four steps: folding, shifting, multiplication, and integration. First, folding makes a mirror image of the input signal along the y-axis. Then the folded signal is shifted, or slid, along the time axis. After that, the folded and shifted signals are multiplied point by point.

The last step is integration over time, which gives the convolution result. This process can be shown graphically for an RC circuit with a given input pulse signal and output response. The same idea also appears in discrete-time systems. There, the input signal x[n] and the impulse response h[n] are combined with the convolution sum to find the output y[n] at each discrete time step n. Knowing both continuous and discrete convolution helps describe LTI system behavior for different inputs.
