Le schéma fonctionnel d'un système de contrôle par rétroaction avec un contrôleur illustre un processus de prototypage de second ordre défini par une fonction de transfert spécifique. Le contrôleur en série, de type, a des constantes proportionnelles et dérivées dans sa fonction de transfert.
Deux façons possibles existent pour créer ce contrôleur dans un circuit électronique. Le premier utilise deux amplificateurs opérationnels mais ne dispose pas d’un réglage indépendant des commandes proportionnelles et dérivées.

PD controllers are used in car suspension systems to adjust damping force as road conditions change. A proportional derivative, or PD, controller combines proportional control and derivative control. In proportional control, the output follows the input with a constant gain. This kind of control is common in continuous-data systems that use parts such as adders and integrators, which also appear in proportional, integral, and derivative, or PID, controllers.

A feedback control system often shows a PD controller as a block diagram built around a second-order prototype process. The series controller in this setup includes proportional and derivative constants in its transfer function. Those constants help improve how the suspension responds to disturbances from the road.

The PD controller can be built in two electronic ways. One method uses two operational amplifiers, but it does not allow independent adjustment of the proportional and derivative controls. It is simpler, but it gives less flexibility for tuning the system.

The second method allows the proportional and derivative controls to be adjusted separately. In this design, using a larger resistor value can compensate for high derivative control. That adjustment gives better control over damping force. The forward-path transfer function then maps the input signal to the output signal more effectively.

Adding a zero through the PD controller can counteract a pole. This improves stability and speeds up the response. It also reduces overshoot and settling time. As a result, the suspension system becomes more stable and more responsive to changing road conditions.
