L'oscillogramme du courant de défaut AC avec son décalage DC supprimé, correspondant à une phase d'une machine synchrone non chargée, montre une amplitude de forme d'onde décroissante d'un sommet initial à une valeur stationnaire.
Ceci est attribué au flux magnétique causé par les courants d’induit de court-circuit, passant de chemins à forte réluctance à des chemins plus faibles, augmentant l’inductance de l’induit. Cela peut être modélisé avec un circuit série R-L variant dans le temps.
La théorie standard des machines fournit des réactances spécifiques utilisées pour calculer le courant de défaut alternatif instantané comprenant la tension terminale de pré-défaut ligne à neutre RMS.
Le courant de défaut sous-transitoire RMS est déterminé à un temps égal à zéro par la constante de temps sous-transitoire de court-circuit à axe direct, et au fur et à mesure que le temps avance, le courant de défaut CA RMS se rapproche de sa valeur d’état stationnaire.
Chaque phase a un décalage DC différent, culminant lorsque alpha est égal à zéro.

Ce calcul est basé sur la tension efficace de borne phase-neutre avant défaut. Le courant efficace de défaut subtransitoire au moment du défaut est déterminé par la réactance subtransitoire de court-circuit de l'axe direct et la constante de temps associée. Au fil du temps, le courant efficace de défaut AC se rapproche de sa valeur en régime permanent.

Chaque phase de la machine subit un décalage DC différent, le décalage maximal se produisant lorsque l'angle de courant initial est nul. Les réactances et les constantes de temps de la machine, fournies par les fabricants ou dérivées de tests, sont cruciales pour prédire le comportement de la machine en cas de panne. A three-phase short circuit on an unloaded synchronous machine shows how fault current changes over time. The AC fault current, with the DC offset removed, starts at a high value and then falls to a steady-state level in one phase of the machine.

This change happens because of the magnetic flux created by the short-circuit armature currents. At first, these currents flow through high-reluctance paths. They later shift to lower-reluctance paths, which increases the armature inductance. This behavior can be modeled as a time-varying series resistor-inductor, or R-L, circuit.

Standard machine theory uses sub-transient, transient, and steady-state reactances to calculate the instantaneous AC fault current. The calculation starts from the RMS line-to-neutral prefault terminal voltage. The RMS sub-transient fault current at the moment of the fault depends on the direct axis short-circuit sub-transient reactance and its time constant. As time passes, the RMS AC fault current settles to its steady-state value.

Each phase also has a different DC offset. The peak offset occurs when the initial current angle is zero. The reactances and time constants, which may come from the manufacturer or from tests, help predict machine behavior during faults. This information supports damage control and system stability, which are important for designing strong power systems and keeping electrical networks reliable and safe.
