Les murs en maçonnerie post-contraint sont construits à l’aide de tiges d’acier filetées à haute résistance ou de câbles flexibles qui sont ancrés à la fondation et prolongés verticalement à l’intérieur des noyaux des unités de maçonnerie ou entre deux largeurs de maçonnerie.
Une fois que la construction du mur est terminée et que le mortier a durci, les câbles sont tendus en étant étirés très fermement à l’aide de vérins hydrauliques spéciaux. Ils sont ensuite ancrés à l’aide de mandrins en acier qui agrippent les fils du tendon.
Alors que les tiges filetées sont tendues en serrant les écrous contre les plaques d’acier installées sur le dessus de la paroi.
Cette tension induit une précontrainte de compression verticale importante dans le mur, qui est beaucoup plus élevée que les contraintes dues au poids propre du mur et aux charges externes agissant sur le mur.
Cette précontrainte de compression développée dans la paroi augmente sa résistance aux forces de traction résultant du vent et des charges sismiques.
Par conséquent, les murs de maçonnerie post-contraints permettent de construire des murs de maçonnerie plus minces par rapport aux murs de maçonnerie renforcée conventionnels, contribuant ainsi à une augmentation de l’espace intérieur de la pièce.

Cette méthode de tension confère au mur une précontrainte de compression verticale importante, dépassant largement les contraintes qui seraient induites par le poids propre du mur et toute charge externe.

L’application d’une telle précontrainte de compression est cruciale car elle améliore la résistance du mur aux forces de traction, qui sont généralement induites par des facteurs environnementaux tels que le vent et l’activité sismique. En permettant l’utilisation de structures de murs plus minces avec moins de noyaux injectés, la maçonnerie post-tendue non seulement économise les matériaux, mais réduit également les coûts de main-d’œuvre et augmente l’espace intérieur disponible, ce qui en fait une option rentable et structurellement avantageuse dans la construction moderne.

Post-tensioned masonry walls gain extra strength from high-strength steel rods or flexible tendons. These tensioning elements are anchored to the foundation and run vertically through the wall. In some walls, they sit inside the cores of the masonry units. In others, they are placed between the masonry wythes, or layers.

The wall is built first with the tensioning elements already in place. After the mortar cures fully, the wall is tightened. Steel rods are tensioned by turning nuts against steel plates at the top of the wall. Flexible tendons are stretched with special hydraulic jacks. Steel chucks then hold the tendon wires in place.

This tightening creates a strong vertical compressive prestress in the wall. Prestress means the wall is put under compression before outside loads act on it. That compressive force is much greater than the wall’s own weight and the stresses from later loading. It helps the wall resist tensile forces, which can come from wind and seismic activity.

Post-tensioned masonry can also make construction more efficient. Thinner walls may be used, and fewer grouted cores are needed. That can save materials and reduce labor costs. It can also leave more usable interior space, which makes this method both practical and structurally useful in modern construction.
