L'âge de l'arbre peut être déterminé en comptant les bandes concentriques appelées anneaux de croissance dans le tronc d'un arbre.
Des cellules tubulaires allongées alignées sur la longueur du tronc définissent le grain du bois. Le bois peut supporter une charge plus importante dans le sens des grains que dans le sens perpendiculaire aux grains.
Le bois est obtenu à partir des arbres sous la forme de longues bûches cylindriques, qui sont transportées vers les moulins pour être coupées.
Les billes sont généralement coupées en planches et en dalles dans les moulins et assaisonnées avant d’être utilisées.
Le bois, en particulier sous forme de bois d’œuvre et de bois, est l’un des matériaux de construction les plus connus.
Les portes, les fenêtres, les planchers, les colonnes, les poutres et les rampes d’escalier sont construits en bois.
De plus, le bois est utilisé pour fabriquer du contreplaqué, des panneaux de particules et des panneaux durs.

Le bois, dérivé des arbres, est un matériau de construction polyvalent et largement utilisé. Les arbres sont dotés d'un tronc entouré d'une couche protectrice d'écorce morte. Sous cette couche extérieure se trouve l'écorce vivante, suivie du cambium, puis de l'aubier qui se transforme en bois de cœur à mesure qu'il mûrit. Au centre du tronc se trouve la moelle. L'âge d'un arbre peut être déterminé en examinant ses cernes de croissance, qui sont des bandes concentriques visibles dans la section transversale du tronc.

L'intégrité structurelle du bois est influencée par son grain : des cellules tubulaires allongées alignées avec la longueur du tronc, lui permettant de supporter des charges plus importantes dans le sens du grain que perpendiculairement au grain.

Le bois est disponible sous forme de grosses bûches cylindriques et transporté vers des usines où il est transformé en planches et en dalles. Avant d'être utilisé dans la construction, le bois est généralement séché pour réduire sa teneur en humidité et améliorer sa durabilité.

Le bois est utilisé comme bois d'œuvre ou bois de construction et fait partie intégrante de la construction de divers éléments structurels et accessoires, notamment les portes, les fenêtres, les revêtements de sol, les toitures, les colonnes, les poutres et les rampes d'escalier. Il est également utilisé dans la fabrication de meubles et d'échafaudages. Au-delà du bois massif, il sert de matériau de base pour la fabrication de contreplaqué, de panneaux de particules et de panneaux durs.

Wood is a construction material made from trees. A tree trunk has several layers. The outside is a protective layer of dead bark. Under that is living bark, then the cambium, then sapwood. As sapwood matures, it becomes heartwood. The pith sits at the center of the trunk.

The age of a tree can be read from its growth rings. These rings are concentric bands seen in a trunk cross-section. Wood strength also depends on grain. Grain refers to elongated, tubular cells that run along the length of the trunk. Wood can carry greater loads along the grain than across it.

Wood is usually cut as large cylindrical logs and sent to mills. There, it is turned into boards and slabs. Before construction use, wood is often seasoned. Seasoning lowers moisture content and helps improve durability.

In building, wood is used as lumber or timber. It is important for doors, windows, flooring, roofing, columns, beams, and stair railings. It is also used to make furniture and scaffolding. Wood is also a base material for plywood, particleboard, and hardboard.
