Habituellement, le bois est recouvert d’un revêtement sur quatre côtés. Généralement, les bois durs ne sont surfacés que sur deux côtés, laissant les autres bords plus rugueux être finalisés par le menuisier.
Le bois surfacé doit toujours présenter une planéité, tandis que les objets tournés doivent présenter une rondeur distincte et les bords doivent toujours apparaître parfaitement droits.
Le ponçage est une autre méthode couramment utilisée pour lisser les surfaces en bois.
Il est toujours recommandé de poncer dans le sens des fibres du bois, en commençant par un grain plus grossier et en passant progressivement à des grains plus fins pour une finition plus lisse.

De même, tout objet en bois tourné doit présenter une rondeur nette et tous les bords doivent être parfaitement droits. Une autre technique courante pour obtenir une finition lisse est le ponçage, qui consiste à utiliser des grains de plus en plus fins. Le ponçage doit toujours être effectué dans le sens des fibres du bois pour éviter d'endommager la surface et garantir une finition lisse.

Grâce à ces méthodes, le surfaçage du bois garantit que les produits en bois sont non seulement esthétiques, mais répondent également à des spécifications précises pour les projets de construction et de menuiserie.

Wood surfacing smooths lumber, improves its size accuracy, and makes it safer to handle. It is a key finishing step in woodworking and construction. The process also helps correct small distortions that can form as wood dries.

Before surfacing, the wood may be sized slightly larger to account for shrinkage during seasoning, which is the drying stage. A plane, a tool with rotating blades, is used to remove material and smooth the surface. The same tool can also round the edges a little, which improves both appearance and safety.

Lumber is usually surfaced on all four sides so the piece is flat and uniform. Hardwoods are often surfaced on only two sides, leaving the remaining rough surfaces for the woodworker to finish as needed. For any surfaced piece, the finished result should be flat. Turned wooden objects should be clearly round, and edges should be straight.

Sanding is another way to create a smooth finish. It uses grit sizes that become finer step by step. Sanding should always follow the direction of the wood fibers to avoid damaging the surface and to leave a smoother result.
