En positionnant une bûche dans un grand tour et en la faisant tourner contre un long tranchant de couteau, une bande continue de placage est progressivement décollée au fur et à mesure que le couteau pénètre régulièrement dans la bûche, ce qui donne un placage à coupe rotative.
Le tranchage simple, le tranchage en quartiers et le tranchage en faille sont d’autres méthodes utilisées dans le processus de placage.
Le tranchage du placage commence par la préparation d’une partie d’une bûche, connue sous le nom de flitch, par sciage.
Le flitch est ensuite fixé en toute sécurité horizontalement contre un cadre mobile robuste.
Un couteau à placage, également monté horizontalement, est placé à côté du flitch.
À chaque mouvement vers le bas du cadre, le flitch est forcé contre le couteau, ce qui entraîne une tranche de placage.
Après chaque mouvement vers le haut, le couteau avance vers le flitch de l’épaisseur d’une tranche de placage. Chaque feuille est aussi large que la section du flitch.
Les lambris fins, les armoires, les planchers de bois, la fabrication de meubles et la fabrication de produits en bois sont des utilisations courantes des placages.

Le placage désigne une fine feuille de bois, généralement produite avec une épaisseur d'environ 3,18 millimètres ou moins. Ce matériau est fabriqué selon diverses méthodes, la plus courante étant la découpe rotative. Dans ce processus, une bûche est montée sur un grand tour et tournée contre le tranchant d'un couteau, ce qui décolle une bande continue de bois lorsque le couteau pénètre plus profondément dans la bûche en rotation, créant ainsi un placage découpé par rotation.

Les autres techniques de placage comprennent le tranchage à plat, le tranchage en quartiers et le tranchage en fentes. Ces méthodes commencent par la préparation d'un segment de la bûche appelé une limaille, qui est sciée à la taille souhaitée. La limaille est ensuite fixée horizontalement contre un cadre mobile. Veneer is a thin sheet of wood that is usually about one-eighth of an inch thick or less. It is made to show the look of wood while using timber more efficiently. Veneer is common in furniture and other finished wood products.

One common way to make veneer is rotary cutting. In this method, a log is mounted in a large lathe and spun against a knife edge. As the knife moves deeper into the turning log, it peels off a continuous strip of wood. This creates rotary-cut veneer.

Other veneer methods include plain-slicing, quarter-slicing, and rift-slicing. These techniques begin with a log section called a flitch, which is sawn to the right size. The flitch is fixed horizontally on a movable frame, and a horizontal veneer knife slices through it as the frame moves downward. After each cut, the knife moves closer by the thickness of one veneer sheet to keep the sheets even.

Veneer is used in fine paneling, cabinetry, wood flooring, and furniture making. It is also used in the manufacture of other wood products. These uses show why veneer is valued for its appearance, versatility, and ability to reduce waste from timber.
