L’huilage et l’humidification des coffrages avant le coulage du béton aident à durcir les éléments en béton avec un faible rapport surface/volume.
Ces coffrages peuvent être laissés en place pendant un certain temps et mouillés s’ils sont en bois, ou s’ils sont retirés tôt, le béton doit être humidifié et recouvert de feuilles de polyéthylène.
Un revêtement est suspendu au-dessus de grandes surfaces horizontales en béton fraîchement posées, exposées au temps sec jusqu’à ce que le béton soit pris, suivi d’un durcissement humide. 
La pulvérisation ou la brumisation de l’eau à l’aide d’un système de buses et l’accumulation ou l’inondation des surfaces en béton avec de l’eau facilitent le durcissement par voie humide.
Alternativement, recouvrir le béton de sciure de bois ou de paille humidifiée ou de tissus saturés retenant l’humidité tels que de la toile de jute humide ou des nattes de coton qui sont soit arrosés périodiquement, soit recouverts d’un film de polyéthylène assure le contact eau-béton.
Fournir des membranes imperméables sur le béton peut minimiser l’évaporation de l’humidité mais empêcher la pénétration d’humidité. Ceux-ci peuvent être faits de papiers imperméables, de feuilles de plastique ou de composés d’étanchéité formant des membranes appliqués manuellement ou pulvérisés sur des surfaces en béton humides.  
Le durcissement des échantillons de béton en laboratoire est réalisé en les immergeant dans l’eau.

Les éléments en béton ayant un faible rapport surface/volume sont durcis en huilant et en humidifiant les coffrages avant de couler l'élément en béton. Ces coffrages peuvent être laissés en place pendant une période prolongée pour éviter la perte d'humidité et peuvent être mouillés s'ils sont fabriqués dans un matériau adapté au mouillage. Si les coffrages sont retirés tôt, l'élément en béton est humidifié et recouvert de feuilles de polyéthylène pour maintenir l'humidité. Pour les grandes surfaces horizontales en béton exposées au temps sec, un revêtement temporaire est suspendu au-dessus de la surface jusqu'à ce que le béton durcisse, après quoi le durcissement humide est initié. Le durcissement humide peut être obtenu en pulvérisant ou en vaporisant de l'eau sur le béton à l'aide d'un système de buses ou en arrosant les surfaces avec de l'eau. De plus, recouvrir le béton de sciure humidifiée, de paille ou de tissus saturés retenant l'humidité comme de la toile de jute ou des tapis de coton humides maintient le contact du béton avec l'eau. Des membranes étanches, telles que des papiers imperméables, des feuilles de plastique ou d’autres composés scellants, sont également utilisées pour réduire l'évaporation de l'humidité du béton. Cependant, ces membranes ne parviennent pas à remplacer l'humidité perdue par auto-dessiccation, car l'entrée d'humidité dans le béton depuis l'extérieur est impossible. L'immersion dans l'eau est pratiquée pour durcir les échantillons de béton testés en laboratoire.

Concrete curing for moisture retention helps fresh concrete keep the water it needs as it hardens. For members with a small surface-to-volume ratio, the forms are often oiled and moistened before the concrete is placed. These forms may stay in place for a long time to reduce moisture loss. If the form material can be wetted, it can also be kept damp.

When forms are removed early, the concrete member is moistened and then covered with polythene sheets. Large horizontal concrete surfaces in dry weather need special care. A temporary cover is suspended above the surface until the concrete sets. After that, wet curing begins.

Wet curing keeps the surface in contact with water. It can be done by spraying or fogging water through nozzles. It can also be done by ponding, which means holding water on the surface. Other materials such as moistened sawdust, straw, wet hessian, or cotton mats may also be used. These water-retaining coverings help prevent the concrete from drying out.

Some curing methods use impervious membranes, such as waterproof paper, plastic sheets, or sealing compounds that form a membrane. These materials reduce moisture evaporation from the concrete. However, they do not replace water lost by self-desiccation, because outside moisture cannot enter the concrete. For laboratory test specimens, curing is often done by immersion in water.
