Derivatives show how fast a function changes, and they also describe slope. A derivative can tell the slope of a straight line or the slope of a tangent line to a curve at one point. In this lesson, the idea is tied to a roller coaster track, where the derivative of the horizontal position tells how steep the ride is at each spot.

A flat roller coaster section can be modeled with a constant function, f(x) = c, where c is a fixed height. Its derivative is f'(x) = 0, so the slope is zero and there is no incline or decline. A line tilted at 45 degrees can be modeled with f(x) = x. Its derivative is f'(x) = 1, which means the slope stays constant at one.

More generally, a straight path that is steeper or gentler than 45 degrees can be written as f(x) = kx, where k is a constant scaling factor. The derivative f'(x) = k shows that the slope stays the same along the entire path. Curved roller coaster sections are often better matched by polynomial functions, where the steepness changes from point to point.

For a polynomial such as f(x) = ax^n, the slope is found with the power rule. This rule gives f'(x) = anx^(n-1). It lets the slope vary with position, which helps describe curved sections more accurately. In some cases, a path can also be modeled by an exponential function like f(x) = e^x. For that type of function, the derivative is proportional to the function itself, so the tangent slope changes in step with the height of the path.
