La règle du produit différencie les fonctions formées par le produit de deux fonctions.Il est dit que la dérivée de deux fonctions u et v est la somme de u multipliée par la dérivée de v et v multipliée par la dérivée de u.Pour comprendre pourquoi, imaginez redimensionner une fenêtre rectangulaire sur un écran. Sa surface est égal à la largeur multipliée par la hauteur.Au fur et à mesure que la largeur et la hauteur changent au fil du temps, la surface totale change également. Ce changement peut être visualisé par l’ajout de nouveaux blocs de pixels le long des bords et des coins.L’expression de la surface totale se compose de trois parties : une pour la largeur, une pour la hauteur et une pour le coin. Pour déterminer le taux de changement, la variation totale de la surface est divisée par l’intervalle de temps.En prenant la limite lorsque l’intervalle de temps tend vers zéro, la première partie devient la hauteur multipliée par le taux de variation de largeur. La seconde devient la largeur multipliée par le taux de variation de la hauteur.La partie d’angle montre le produit du tout petit changement de largeur et du tout petit changement de hauteur. Lorsque la limite tend vers zéro, la partie coin, qui dépend du temps, s’annule.Le résultat correspond à la règle du produit, montrant chaque fonction multipliée par la dérivée de l’autre.

The Product Rule

The Product Rule helps find the derivative of a product of two changing functions. In calculus, it states that the derivative of one function times another equals the first function times the rate of change of the second, plus the second function times the rate of change of the first. This rule shows how to account for both functions when they vary at the same time.

A useful way to see the rule is with a rectangle whose width and height both change over time. If the width and height represent two functions of time, then the area of the rectangle is their product. As both dimensions change, the area changes in a way that reflects both directions at once.

Over a small time interval, the change in area has three parts. One strip comes from the width changing while the height stays constant. Another strip comes from the height changing while the width stays constant. A small square appears at the corner where both changes overlap.

As the time interval becomes very small, that corner square becomes negligible. When the total change in area is divided by the time interval and the interval approaches zero, the corner term vanishes. What remains are the two linear parts from the changing width and height, which matches the Product Rule.
