Le théorème de la valeur moyenne établit une relation entre le taux moyen de variation d’une fonction sur un intervalle et son taux de variation instantané à un moment donné dans cet intervalle.Le théorème de la valeur moyenne affirme que si une fonction est continue sur un intervalle fermé et différentiable sur l’intervalle ouvert, alors il existe au moins un point c dans l’intervalle ouvert où le taux de variation instantané est égal au taux moyen de variation entre les extrémités a et b.Pour relier cela à un exemple réel, considérons un véhicule circulant sur une route entre deux points : sa vitesse est initialement faible, augmente à mi-chemin, puis diminue vers la fin.Une droite tangente touche la courbe en un seul point, et la pente de cette droite donne le taux instantané de variation de vitesse à ce moment. La pente d’une ligne secante, qui traverse deux points sur la courbe, montre le taux moyen de variation de vitesse entre ces points.Cette pente secante est égale à la variation globale de la valeur de la fonction le long de l’intervalle fermé divisée par la longueur horizontale de l’intervalle.Le théorème garantit qu’au moins un instant pendant le trajet, l’accélération instantanée doit avoir été exactement égale à l’accélération moyenne.

The Mean Value Theorem links average change to instantaneous slope. It shows that when a function changes smoothly over an interval, the average change across the whole interval must match the change at one specific point inside it.

The theorem is easy to see in a motion example. Imagine a vehicle traveling between two points on a road. Its velocity can change during the trip, beginning slowly, speeding up during acceleration, and slowing down near the end.

Even when the speed is not constant, the total change can still be averaged over the full trip. On a graph, that average change is the slope of the straight line between the start and end points. The instantaneous change is the slope of a line that touches the curve at one moment.

The Mean Value Theorem guarantees that at least one point exists where those two slopes are equal. In physical terms, there is at least one instant during the journey when the vehicle’s instantaneous acceleration matches its average acceleration over the interval. This idea helps connect average behavior and instant-by-instant behavior in applied mathematics and engineering.
